The Department of Mathematics has an internationally recognized faculty and a strong graduate program leading to both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. A broad range of programs is possible including algebra, analysis, combinatorics, control theory, dynamical systems, geometry, numerical analysis, probability, statistics, stochastic analysis/control, partial differential equations, set theory, and topology. The department has a long tradition of excellence. The first Ph.D. granted west of the Mississippi was in mathematics at KU in the year 1895. Since then, the graduate program has been a central part of the department’s research and teaching. Historic Snow Hall, which houses the department, contains state-of-the-art classrooms, lecture spaces, computer labs, and other facilities.

40% TEACHING/ADVISING: The normal teaching load in the Department of Mathematics is three courses per year. Duties include developing curricular, prepare and attend all class meetings, develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, assign grades, hold regular office hours, and adhere to department, College and University policies. All faculty are expected to be active in advising. Direction of Ph.D. dissertations is not ordinarily expected of non-tenured faculty. Such faculty do occasionally advise M.A. students' work on their research components. All faculty are to take their teaching and advising responsibilities seriously and to strive for excellence in the classroom.
20% SERVICE: Tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in appropriate professional activities, such as attending department meetings, carrying out departmental committee assignments, attending national meetings or conferences, and refereeing or reviewing manuscripts for research journals and grant proposals. Service to the College and University is also expected and to the greater profession at large.
COLLEGIALITY: All faculty members are expected to act in a manner that promotes collegial relationships and shows respect toward students, staff, and colleagues. Faculty members are expected to meet satisfactory standards of performance in all three areas of responsibility and to carry out those responsibilities in accordance with the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct
- Ph.D. or ABD in Mathematics expected by the start date of appointment (August 18, 2018).
- Research area in differential geometry and/or algebraic geometry, with an emphasis on geometry.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching in mathematics as evidenced by teaching philosophy statement and/or reference letter on teaching.
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in research as evidenced by graduate coursework, dissertation research, publications, and/or externally funded research grants.
