Position Overview

The Assistant Professor of Modern Israel in Jewish Studies will focus in the area of modern Israel politics. The Assistant Professor is a tenure-track position, and will teach four courses a year, conduct research, advise students, participate in and develop Jewish Program events, and participate in department, university and community events.

The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins.

Job Description

Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Job Duties

40% Teaching Responsibilities:

• Teach four courses/academic year in his/her field of specialty. The individual is expected to take their teaching responsibilities seriously and to strive for excellence in the classroom. Prepare for and attend all class meetings. In case of absence, arrangements must be made for a substitute to teach class. Classes should not be canceled. Provide instruction throughout the semester, usually 3 hours/week, one day a week. Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades. Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught. A minimum of three posted office hours each week is required. These office hours should be divided over at least two and preferably three different days. The faculty member should be available for reasonable appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours. Adhere to departmental, program, college and university policies.
• Treat students with courtesy and with respect for their rights, including, but not limited to, academic freedom and those rights as outlined in the Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities.

40% Research Responsibilities:

• Develop and maintain an active research program that is advanced substantially beyond the level of the Ph.D. thesis. It should provide solid evidence that the tenure-track faculty member is a dedicated scholar whose research will continue to develop in depth and importance throughout his or her career.

20% Service Responsibilities:

• Participate in appropriate professional activities, such as serving on panels, co-organizing workshops/conferences, and refereeing or reviewing manuscripts for research journals.
• Tenure-track faculty members must share in the work of the department and program, which includes attending program and faculty meetings and participating in departmental and program committees.
• Tenure-track faculty members must treat colleagues with courtesy and with respect for their rights, including, but not limited to, academic freedom.

All faculty members are expected to act in a manner that promotes collegial relationships and shows respect toward students, staff, and colleagues.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application and (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in c.v.:

1. PhD in Modern Israel Studies.
2. Expertise in Israeli politics and society.
3. Has a Middle East area specialization, with a focus on Israel.
