Position Overview

The Department of Molecular Biosciences, University of Kansas, seeks an assistant researcher with experience and/or interest in molecular biology and husbandry of the model organism nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans. The successful candidate will be engaged in a project involving functional transcriptomics of neuronal migration. The project will involve C. elegans genetics and microscopy, dissociation and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) of C. elegans cells, high-throughput next generation RNA sequencing, and other molecular genetic techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing. This position consists of an initial one-year appointment beginning in July 2018. The applicant should be motivated, organized, detail-oriented, work well with others, have a willingness to learn, and be able to participate in many different lab activities.

Job Description

  • 40% C. elegans husbandry related to functional transcriptomics, including microscopy, growth, cell dissociation, and FACS cell sorting.
  • 40% Molecular biology related to functional transcriptomics, such as cloning, PCR, nucleic acid extraction, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, and next generation sequencing library preparation.
  • 20% Assistance as needed with general lab tasks such as solution and media preparation, lab organization and cleanliness, and ordering.

Required Qualifications

  1. B.S. in Biology or related field.
  2. Experience with molecular biological techniques as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with C. elegans husbandry.
  2. Experience will cell dissociation and sorting.
  3. Experience with fluorescence microscopy.
  4. Experience with CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing.
