Position Overview

This position involves employment litigation and, from time to time, litigation involving tort matters, medical malpractice, contract disputes, and other issues common to a large state agency. The incumbent’s primary responsibility is representing all campuses of the University in state and federal litigation, proceedings before federal and state administrative agencies, including the Kansas Public Employee Relations Board, as well as before University grievance and other administrative committees. Duties include working with counsel from the Kansas Attorney General’s office and supervising outside counsel.

Job Description

100% Representing the University in state and federal litigation and proceedings before federal and state administrative agencies, including the Kansas Public Employee Relations Board, as well as before University grievance and other administrative committees. Litigation duties also include working with outside counsel from the Attorney General’s office and coordinating with other outside counsel. Position also includes advising administrators, faculty, staff and others on employment and labor and other personnel matters, including advice on pertinent federal and state laws and regulations, and Regents and University policies and procedures, drafting and reviewing legal documents not related to litigation and performing other duties as assigned by the University General Counsel.

Required Qualifications

  1. Must have a J.D. from an ABA accredited school.
  2. Membership in Kansas bar, or admission to membership within 12 months of hire.
  3. Minimum of three years practice experience in employment matters.
  4. Minimum of five years active litigation experience.
  5. Experience trying cases in state, federal or tribal courts.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as demonstrated by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience representing institutions of higher education or other public entities.
  2. Experience in labor, construction, or civil rights practice.
