Position Overview

The School of Business at the University of Kansas is searching for a full time, tenured Associate or Full Professor in Strategic Management beginning August 2020.

We seek a candidate who researches strategic decisions and competitive advantage with a broadly defined economics-based approach but can collaborate with other areas of strategy. Areas of expertise might include, but are not limited to, transactions cost economics, real options, resource-based view, dynamic capabilities, market entry strategies, and other mainstream strategy content theories or topics. You will join an engaged research community in strategy, which includes Vince Barker, Clint Chadwick (Area Chair), Minyoung Kim (Search Committee Chair), Jun Ho Lee, Scott Mitchell and Jane Zhao, and are joined by faculty in HR/OB which include Niki A. den Nieuwenboer, Jill Ellingson, Jim Guthrie, Douglas May and Catherine Schwoerer.

General Information: The strategic management faculty in the School of Business at the University of Kansas seek to produce leading research using both behavioral and economic approaches to understanding how firms create, capture, and sustain competitive advantage. We focus on important firm processes and decisions, including firm geographic and product/service expansion, knowledge sharing within and across firms, strategic decision making and firm adaptation to changing industries, technologies, competitor strategies and performance-centric issues. We understand that people and groups are at the basis of these processes and decisions whether we are researching optimal decision strategies or how actual processes unfold as industries, firms and their employees adapt to changing circumstances. Thus, our research reflects the central role of people in organizational success. Maintaining a group of strategic management faculty with diverse perspectives allows our research to interact with the broader strategic management research community and high potential PhD students with different interests. Our doctoral students take graduate level classes in both economics and behavioral sciences as they develop their own research expertise.

The University of Kansas is an international research university of nearly 30,000 students (20,000 undergraduate students) and has been a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities since 1909. KU consistently earns high rankings for its academic programs. Its faculty and students are supported and strengthened by endowment assets of more than $1.5 billion. Its main campus resides in Lawrence which is about 45 minutes from Kansas City by automobile and 60 minutes from Kansas City International Airport. Lawrence is a college town with a good school system and vibrant performing arts. It is consistently ranked by national publications as one of the best small cities in the United States in which to live.

The KU School of Business’ home is Capitol Federal Hall, which opened in May 2017 and cost $70.5 Million to construct. Capitol Federal Hall has state-of-the-art classrooms and technology to support KU’s various business degree programs. With eight majors, two minors and six concentrations, the undergraduate programs at the KU School of Business have seen rapid enrollment growth over the last decade.

Job Description

40% - Teach a combination of required and elective courses in Strategic Management at the undergraduate, MBA and doctoral levels.

40% - Conduct and publish research on Strategic Management in leading academic journals.

20% - Engage in school, university, and professional service activities as needed.

Required Qualifications

  1. A Ph.D. in Strategic Management or a closely related field.
  2. Currently holds the position of Associate or Full Professor at a research-oriented university of a similar or higher research profile as the University of Kansas and has demonstrated excellent scholarship as shown through top-tier publications.
  3. Record of productive teaching excellent in Strategic Management.
Evaluation of these requirements will be made through the application materials. Appointment at a particular level will be based on an applicant's scholarly and teaching record.

For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor:
  1. A Ph.D. in Strategic Management or a closely related field.
  2. Record of productive teaching excellence in Strategic Management.
  3. Demonstrated excellent scholarship as shown through publications that have enabled the candidate to be successfully promoted to Associate Professor at a research-oriented university of a similar or higher research profile as the University of Kansas.
For appointment at the rank of Full Professor:
  1. A Ph.D. in Strategic Management or a closely related field.
  2. Established record of teaching excellence in Strategic Management.
  3. Sustained record of excellent scholarship as shown through publications and the development on an international scholarly reputation that have enabled the candidate to be successfully promoted to Full Professor at a research-oriented university of a similar or higher research profile as the University of Kansas.
