Position Overview

The Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics was established in 1997 as a result of Senator Dole’s gift of his papers to the University of Kansas. The Dole Institute makes the Senator’s official and personal papers and congressional materials available to scholars and the public alike, and hosts a continuing set of lively programs that connect politics, public policy, and history to faculty, students, and the general public. The gift of Senator Elizabeth Dole’s papers, in 2017, incorporates her own legacy into the full slate of program offerings at the Dole Institute.

The mission of the Dole Institute of Politics is to promote political and civic participation as well as civil discourse in a bi-partisan, philosophically balanced manner. By providing a forum for discussion of political and economic issues, fostering public service leadership and encouraging participation in the political process, we emphasize that politics is an honorable profession and provide opportunities for all to interact with political leaders, practitioners and authors. The Dole Institute also emphasizes that only through political and civic participation can citizens redirect the course of our nation.

The Robert J. and Elizabeth Dole Archives and Special Collections department is responsible for collections-based functions at the Dole Institute of Politics. Our collections include one of the largest congressional manuscript collections in the country which attracts researchers from around the world.

Job Description

Responsible for conducting appraisal, acquisitions, arrangement, andmanagement of archival collections. Provides access, digitizing,conducting reference and outreach services that supports the physicaland intellectual control of primary source materials (in both physicaland electronic formats) of enduring value. Bachelor¿s degree with oneyear of archival or related experience. Some departments may require a Master's degree in Library Science or History with some archival coursework.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree with one year experience working with digital repositories.
  2. Experience or demonstrated knowledge of digital repositories, preservation management systems and/or digital asset management systems, such as Entermedia and Islandora
  3. Experience and/or demonstrated knowledge of metadata standards including DACS, Dublin Core and other relevant standards such as EAD, MODS and METS.
  4. Experience and/or demonstrated knowledge of digitization standards
  5. Experience and/or demonstrated knowledge of digital preservation standards
  6. Proven ability to work independently as demonstrated by experience or coursework.
*Position requirements: This position requires the ability to lift boxes weighing forty pounds either with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program
  2. Concentration or certification in digital curation or digital archives
  3. Project management experience, especially of large-scale digitization projects
  4. Experience in database administration and/or data manipulation
  5. Experience using archival collections management software such as Archon, Archivesspace, Preservica, or Archivematica
  6. Demonstrated excellence in workflow development and documentation
  7. Archival coursework or certification through the Academy of Certified Archivists
  8. Experience with born-digital archival processing and digital curation
  9. Experience with IIIF, DPLA, and/or other image-based APIs
  10. Experience using Drupal and coding websites
  11. Experience working with congressional or political archives

Terms of Appointment: The Digital Initiatives Coordinator is a full-time, unclassified professional staff position. Salary is dependent upon qualifications, hiring range starts at $41,299.
