Position Overview

KU Recreation Services, a Department within Student Affairs, provides a campus-wide impact by improving the quality of life for all students, faculty, staff, affiliates, retirees, alumni, spouses, and domestic partners through its fitness and wellness initiatives. KU Recreation Services provide state-of-the-art recreational programs, facilities, and services.

Facilities include the Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center (“ASRFC”), opened in September 2003 and expanded in 2008, several outside spaces, and Robinson Center. The ASRFC is comprised of many different activity spaces: 16,000 square feet of cardiovascular resistance training and free weight equipment, six indoor basketball/volleyball courts, a three-lane suspended jogging track, an aerobics studio, a martial arts studio, four racquetball courts, one squash court, dasher board system multipurpose gym, golf simulator, a 42-foot climbing wall and bouldering wall, two outdoor basketball courts, conference room, and a multimedia room. Outdoor facilities include: 13 acres of grass field spaces at the Shenk Recreational Sports Complex, the Adams Outdoor Education Center (challenge course), one artificial turf field (Central Field), four lighted sand volleyball courts, and four lighted tennis courts. KU Recreation Services utilizes the Robinson Center for its aquatic activities.

Programs within KU Recreation Services include Fitness, Intramurals, Sport Clubs, and Outdoor Pursuits. Fitness offers group fitness “KU Fit” with classes focused on cardio, strength, and mind and body, Personal Training, and Fitness Assessments. Intramurals play team sports, team tournaments, and individual activities. Sport Clubs participate in a wide variety of competitive, recreational and instructional sports. Job Description

45% - Coordinate the KU Fit Program including:
  • Plan and implement semester schedules with approximately 50 classes per week including a variety of classes such as strength, dance fitness, fitness boxing, cycling, yoga, etc.
  • Plan and implement specialty classes such as Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga, Belly dancing, etc.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise approximately 18 KU Fit instructors.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and document staff performance throughout the year.
  • Supervise a KU Fit student Program Manager
  • Recruit, plan, and implement the ACE Group Fitness Instructor Prep Course, an in-house group exercise training class.
  • Oversee daily operations of the KU Fit program, including sign ups, optional fees, attendance records and equipment/facility upkeep.
  • Maintain payroll for KU Fit.
  • Prepare monthly, semester, and yearly reports on classes and make recommendations as necessary.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive training and assessment program for KU Fit and staff.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure safe instruction and risk management.
  • Oversee and implement protocol for the KU Fit and specialty programs including administration in Fusion (access, point of sale and programming software).
  • Purchase and inventory equipment for KU Fit classes.
  • Ensure that all employees have achieved and/or maintain appropriate levels of training and certification including CPR/AED.
  • Assist the Marketing Coordinator in promoting overall class participation.
  • Plan and host fitness certifications and workshops (CEU opportunities).
  • Research industry trends and assess new and current programming.
  • Conduct regular staff trainings/in-services.
35% - Oversee CRT (Cardiovascular/Resistance Training) Specialists who supervise the CRT area (cardio/weight rooms)
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate approximately 11-15 student staff.
  • Oversee daily operations of the CRT area including equipment/facility upkeep.
  • Develop a comprehensive training and assessment program for the CRT and staff.
  • Maintain CRT payroll.
  • Create staff work schedules using When to Work.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and document staff performance throughout the year.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure safe instruction and risk management.
  • Conduct regular staff trainings/in-services.
  • Assist on the CRT floor when needed.
  • Collaborate with facility staff to create a cohesive work environment.
10% - Develop and manage incentive programs and special events within fitness.

5% - Assist with the development and management of the fitness budget.

5% - Other including:
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Fitness/Wellness, as needed with the development and implementation of the faculty and staff wellness program University-wide.
  • Assist the Assistant Director Fitness/Wellness, as needed with personal training, ACE Personal Training Prep Course, fitness assessments (FIT4U).
  • Develop a collaborative relationship with other departments across campus and participate on University committees to meet the goals of the Chancellor’s Strategic Initiatives as assigned.
  • Instruct CPR/AED trainings on a rotational basis.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
Position Expectations:
  1. The person in this position is responsible for knowledge of and compliance with Board of Regents, University policies and NCAA rules and regulations regarding day to day job related activities applicable to the position that could involve contact with student athletes.
  2. Standard 40 hours Monday through Friday with some flexibility. May require some morning, evening, or weekend work. Must be on site to direct work of student staff.
  3. This position has been identified as a Campus Safety Authority. (Most positions are identified as Mandatory Reporters.)
  4. CPR/AED training will be provided free of charge if not currently certified.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor degree from an accredited institution (must have graduated by time of employment).
  2. Minimum of 1 year professional work experience in fitness management; 2 years as a graduate assistant equals 1 year work experience (must have graduated by time of employment).
  3. Previous experience as a group exercise instructor.
  4. Certification in group exercise from ACE, ACSM, AFAA, or NETA.
  5. Certification in indoor group exercise cycling such as Keiser, Krank Cycle, Schwinn, Spinning or be willing to obtain within 4 months of hire.
  6. Prior experience supervising staff.
  7. The position will require current CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain CPR/AED certification within 4 weeks of start date.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master degree from an accredited institution in Physical Education, Recreation, Exercise Physiology, Health Education, Exercise Science or related field.
  2. Work experience in fitness management in a university setting.
  3. Two (2) or more years of full time work experience in a comprehensive campus recreation setting.
  4. Successful experience supervising professional and/or student staff.
  5. Certification in personal training from ACE, ACSM, W.I.T.S, NASM or NSCA.
  6. At least one (1) year experience instructing indoor cycle.
  7. Certification from Keiser Cycling.
  8. Experience teaching and administering Les Mills Programs, specifically Body Pump.
  9. Demonstrated professional involvement such as presenting or committee work, particularly involvement with fitness organizations such as NIRSA, ACE, ACSM, AFAA, NSCA.
  10. Aquatic and/or fitness assessment experience.
  11. Current certification as an instructor for CPR/AED training or willingness to obtain after hire.
  12. Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills.
  13. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  14. Team oriented and independent to work on multiple tasks.
  15. Demonstrated experience with PC computer technology.
