Jill Kuhnheim begins her KU workday by heading to the Hill, where she’s a professor of Spanish & Portuguese and director of the Latin American Studies Program. Her doctorate is from the University of California-San Diego, and her focus is contemporary poetry and culture in Spanish America. Her partner, Theresa Shireman, travels into Kansas City, Kan., where she’s a professor of Preventive Medicine & Public Health and of Health Policy & Management with special expertise in analyzing patterns of pharmacotherapy in national databases. She holds a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They temper their high-energy academic careers with running and biking, gardening, and watching international films — that is, when they aren’t engaged in the myriad activities of their son, nearly 8. A recent family pleasure has been donning their wellies, rounding up the dog, and taking to local streams and lakes in search of snails, frogs, and crawdads.
