30% - Project Support: Serves as a project team member in an interior designer role. Provides the Project Manager and project team members with interior design support in either a design role or to review consultant work and to help make decisions or provide recommendations regarding design and construction issues. Helps PM to coordinate and assure work is done properly, as noted in PM tasks/roles above.
10% - Construction Administration: Provides construction administration services as either Project Manager or in a support role. If serving as Construction Manager, coordinates with and manages the project under guidance and direction from the PM. Serves as a representative of KU’s interests. Initiates and conducts project pre-construction conferences which include all involved parties. Files and distributes project communications and approved shop drawings. Makes periodic site visits at appropriate intervals to review and observe progress and details of construction work, reporting questionable items to A/E for appropriate follow up action / directions to the Contractor. Identifies field problems and works with the project team to develop solutions. Receives departmental requests for changes to the work, prepares technical description of changes and forwards to PM and A/E to request pricing proposals. Reviews proposed design changes and change order proposals, and forwards written recommendations to the FPD PM, A/E and Contractor. Schedules substantial completion, final and warranty inspections and assists the A/E in developing a punch list of incomplete or unsatisfactory work for the Contractor to complete. Ensures punch list and warranty items are completed in a timely manner.
10% - Furniture Planning, Coordination and Reuse: Assists clients with furniture selection and reuse. Establishes schedules to coordinate new and/or existing furniture configurations. Establishes budgets. Works with vendors and KU Surplus Property to provide turnkey projects.
5% - Planning and Programming: Performs or assists with planning and programming to establish project program requirements, budgets and schedules. Meets with clients and other KU departments to establish program requirements which meet client's needs, and identifies scope and budget limits of proposed improvements. Develops Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) studies and preliminary cost estimates, using Excel spreadsheets, for projects which are typically less than $750,000 in cost. For consultant projects, develops written scope of required A/E services and requests / processes fee proposals.
5% - Other Duties as Assigned: Performs miscellaneous tasks and duties as requested by the University Archited, FPD Director, University Engineer, or Supervisor, in support of tasks and areas of responsibility assigned to the FPD office as a whole. Develop reports and/or grant applications and presents information regarding assigned projects. Assists with campus long range master plans as assigned. Assists with updates to the KU design & construction standards. Assists with KU building condition evaluations and cost estimates. Participates in staff meetings and continuing education programs. Complies with and support directions and decisions made by the University Architect, FPD Director and University Engineer.
5% - Data Management/Reporting: Enters updates and provides information for the FPD project database and Maximo, using database entry forms. As Project Manager, verifies that each assigned project's database information is current and accurate on an ongoing basis.
5% - Performs other related work as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in interior design or closely-related field.
- Five years of work experience performing interior design.
- Good written communication skills as evidenced by application material.
- Experience managing time sensitive, simultaneous projects with a variety of stake holders.
- Basic computer skills and experience using Microsoft Office applications as evidenced by application material.
- Certified by and in good standing with the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications.
- Experience working with AutoCAD and other CAD, graphics or related software.
- Experience preparing cost estimates for building improvements.
- Interior design or closely-related experience at KU or another institution of higher learning.
