Position Overview

The Intramural Sports Umpire is responsible for providing an atmosphere of fun in a competitive, yet safe, environment. Umpires must be able to implement Intramural Sports policies and sport specific rules in order to maintain an appropriate level of control, fairness, and safety. Umpires should maintain a positive attitude on-site and should always be striving to improve their umpiring/officiating skills.

This is a seasonal position with the opportunity to also officiate flag football, volleyball and basketball in the fall semester.

Job Description

Recreation Services and the Intramural Sports program are seeking students to join our team as an Intramural 3-Pitch Softball Umpire for the fall 2022 3-Pitch Softball season. The umpire is responsible for effectively umpiring the sport of 3-Pitch Softball and the general safety of the participants.

No prior umpiring/officiating experience is needed. All training will be provided by student Supervisors prior to beginning work.

Participation in Intramural Sports by umpires is encouraged!

The duties of an Intramural Sports Umpire include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Accurate documentation of hours worked
  • Minor pre-game field set up
  • Pre-game captain's meeting administration
  • Unbiased administration of rules decisions based on training for that particular sport
  • Verification of final score of all games worked with a signature on each completed score sheet
  • Assigning an appropriate Sportsmanship Rating to each team following each contest
  • Assisting other umpires and/or supervisors in any matters concerning Intramural Sports

Required Qualifications

An applicant for the position of an Intramural 3-Pitch Softball Umpire must have:
  • Status as an enrolled student with at least 6 hours at The University of Kansas
  • Work history that required being moderately physically active for hours at a time (maximum of four hours at a time)
  • A baseline knowledge of the sport of softball or baseball
  • Current NFHS Concussion In Sports Certification or willingness to obtain within the first month of employment

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred applicant for the position of an Intramural 3-Pitch Softball Umpire will have:
  • Previous umpiring/officiating or sports participation experience

  • A professional and cooperative demeanor

Additional Candidate Instructions

Review of this position occurs regularly through September 23.

  • Availability to work on Sundays as evidenced in application material
  • Availability to be present and engaged at all three dates of the paid Intramural Flag Football Officials Training:
    • Tuesday, September 13 from 5:00p – 8:00p

Work Schedule

Mondays – Thursdays: Early afternoon to late evening.
