KU Recreation Services, a department within Student Affairs, provides a campus-wide impact at the University of Kansas by improving the quality of life for all students, faculty, staff, affiliates, retirees, alumni, spouses, and domestic partners. KU Recreation Services provides state-of-the-art recreational programs (Fitness, Intramurals, Outdoor Pursuits, and Sport Clubs), facilities, and services.

The Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center (ASRFC) is a $17 million facility which opened in September 2003. In 2008, a $6.3 million expansion was completed, increasing the total indoor space to 150,000 square feet. The ASRFC is comprised of many different activity spaces: 16,000 square feet of cardiovascular resistance training and free weight equipment, six indoor basketball/volleyball courts, a three-lane suspended jogging track, an aerobics studio, a martial arts studio, four racquetball courts, one squash court, a dasher board system gymnasium, a golf simulator, a 42-foot climbing wall and bouldering wall, two outdoor basketball courts, a conference room, and multimedia room.

Job Description

The Intramural Sports Supervisor is responsible for the on-site supervision of Intramural Sports Officials and administration of the various Intramural Sports activities. Supervision will include multiple activities that can occur simultaneously. An Intramural Sports Supervisor must have a comprehensive knowledge of team sport and individual / dual activities. Experience as an official at The University of Kansas or similar situation is preferred, but not required. An Intramural Sports Supervisor will work in collaboration with other Intramural Sports Supervisors mostly afternoons (beginning at 3:30p) and evenings, Sunday through Thursday with some Friday and Saturday hours and possible early morning hours. This individual will have supervision from the Assistant Director for Intramural Sports and Program Manager of Staff, and will assist in overseeing the Intramural Sports program and activities by:
  • Managing over 30 Intramural Sports activities and events
  • Creatively administering programmatic Policies and Procedures at game sites and facilities
  • Serving as the first point of contact for over 1,000 teams and 7,000 annual participants
  • Training, evaluating, and assessing the Intramural Sports officiating staff of approximately 50 students
  • Providing experiential evaluations and support for all team sport officials to aid in their development
  • Responding to injuries, rule protests, rule interpretations, disciplinary matters, and facility concerns with timely proficiency and competence
  • Completing all forms and documents accurately and thoroughly
  • Representing Intramural Sports to the campus community in an exemplary manner
  • Assisting participants, spectators, and fans when needed in a professional and courteous fashion
  • Supplementing budget preparation by precisely documenting staff work hours
  • Continuing to officiate all 9 team sports as needed
  • Attending, engaging, and participating in all biweekly Intramural Sports Staff Meetings and Intramural Sports Official’s Trainings
  • Ambitiously contributing to the development and evolution of the Policies and Procedures of the program during the end of the year program review
  • Analyzing and offering influential observations and feedback which lead to a better experience for Intramural Sports participants and officials
  • Making nominations for the Granada Player of the Week and Granada Official of the Week

Required Qualifications

An applicant for the position of Intramural Sports Supervisor must have the following as evidenced on application material:
  • Status as an enrolled student with at least 6 hours at The University of Kansas
  • Prior experience and/or background in team sports/activities
  • Prior officiating experience of at least one semester in at least one major sport
  • Prior experience requiring the implementation of company policies
  • Current CPR/AED Certification or willingness to obtain within the first month of employment
  • Current NFHS Concussion In Sports Certification or willingness to obtain within the first month of employment

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred application for the position of Intramural Sports Supervisor will have:
  • Officiating experience in the Intramural Sports Program at The University of Kansas or similar situation
  • A positive and high energy attitude
  • Ability to communicate and engage with Intramural Sports participants and staff
  • Strong conflict mediation skills
  • A willingness to learn and have fun
