A valid driver's license with proof of good driving record is required as this position requires daily travel by car to the target schools/area. There is also occasional evening and weekend work. The applicant that is hired will be required to successfully pass a background check.
The TRIO-UBMS Academic Advisor will provide college advising, mentoring, academic/career/college development workshops, tutoring resources, and hands-on assistance in the college application and financial aid processes to program participants and their families. The Academic Advisor will live in the residence hall during the 6-week residential summer institute as well assist with overall recruitment efforts and special programming to encourage students to complete secondary school, and then enroll in and complete postsecondary school. The Academic Advisor will work with 9th-12th graders at assigned high schools as well as participants’ families.
- Provide 1:1 and group advising sessions, workshops, and meetings (weekly and monthly) to 9-12th graders at assigned target high schools
- Lead college visits, STEM activities, and field trips for high school participants
- Provide 1:1 and group advising to assist seniors in applying/enrolling in a postsecondary institution and completing the FAFSA and scholarship applications
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programming, and activities to ensure the attainment of the program goals and objectives
- Perform other duties as assigned by Assistant Director
- Serve as the Residence Hall Director in Summer Institute Program
- Assist in planning, organizing and implementing recreational, social, and cultural activities, and maintain discipline and harmonious relations in the residence hall, campus buildings/classrooms, and all other areas of the program activities; participate in all program recreational activities, field trips and residential life, and conduct required workshops for participants
- Assist with the development and implementation of the Academic Year programming
- Assist with the coordinating family workshops
- Assist with summer planning and programs as needed
30% - Student Records Management, Tracking, and Program Guidance
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate records and documentation regarding participant contacts, activities, progress, follow-up and evaluation
- Monitor student participation and ensure program goals and objectives are being met using formative and summative evaluations and tracking processes
- Compile and analyze data, prepare/submit reports in a timely manner to Assistant Director, and assist with all required reports, including the Annual Performance (APR) for the US Department of Education
- Provide effective lines of communications with Assistant Director, program staff, secondary school personnel, and university and community partners to ensure a positive work environment and effective service delivery
- Promote the program services and assist with program communication to include but not limited to presentations, website, social media presence and mailings
- Attend scheduled staff meetings, trainings sessions, and parent/student meetings
- Bachelor’s degree in education, STEM, social services, psychology, counseling or related field at time of appointment
- At least one year experience working with target population that required a strong commitment to diversity , equity, and inclusion in education
- Knowledge of the college and financial aid processes and other relevant educational resources
- Demonstrated ability to work independently to organized, prioritize multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and follow through on details to completion as evidenced by application materials
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer application skills (i.e., Microsoft Office applications/software, internet research, email) as evidenced by application materials
- Demonstrated strong oral and written communication (including experience making presentations to a variety of audiences) as evidenced by application materials
- Demonstrated ability to exercise basic human relation skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with the target schools, community partners, university community and the public
- Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, counseling or related field
- Two years of experience working with low-income and/or first generation college going high school students
- Prior experience working with TRIO or similar programs
- Demonstrated proficient oral and written communication in Spanish
- Demonstrated sensitivity and experience working with students and/or individuals from diverse social, economic, academic, and cultural backgrounds
- Experience with conflict resolution
- Tutoring experience
- Experience coordinating and supervising group living in a team focused work environment
- Familiarity with college residence hall policies and procedures
- Valid driver's license
- At least six months prior supervisory experience

The work schedule is 20 hours, Wednesdays and Thursdays preferred due to Leavenworth and Turner school district schedule and availability to work with students. Other hours are negotiable and flexible and occasional evening and weekend hours will be required for events and programming for program participants.
