Position Overview

A full-time postdoctoral position is available at the National Center for Construction Safety at the University of Kansas School of Engineering. The Center provides a unique opportunity to facilitate proactive safety management research. The intention is to break new ground in all aspects of construction safety. The Center operates with a “reduction-to-practice” philosophy, guiding research approaches in a way that maximizes value to the industry and focuses on discoveries that are directly translatable to professional practice. The position provides significant opportunities for growth and pursuing a career in academia or industry. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or a closely related field of engineering with specialization in Construction Engineering and Management by time of appointment.

Job Description

60% Research
Engage in scholarly research related to construction safety, including applying for external funding, presenting at professional conferences, and if possible, developing intellectual property.

20% Reporting
Writes technical reports and scientific papers for peer reviewed journals. Additional responsibilities include assisting in the preparation of grants/contracts and proposals for federal, state and charitable organizations and industrial clients.

20% Collaboration
Work collaboratively with colleagues and industry partners. Assist the principal investigator to provide technical supervision of one or more technician and graduate students.


Required Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or closely related field of engineering with specialization in construction engineering and management by date of appointment.
  2. Demonstrable research qualifications in construction safety.
  3. Demonstrated ability to relate and communicate effectively in the context of the research area of the candidate.
NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an Acting basis not to exceed 6-months.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience in managing commercial, industrial, or infrastructure construction projects.
