Position Overview

The Walters lab in the Department of Ecology and Evolution, University of Kansas, is seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher to join an NSF-funded project developing an R/Bioconductor package focused on applying linear mixed models to RNA-seq data, with a primary aim of analyzing of sex chromosome dosage compensation and related gene regulatory processes. The primary responsibilities of this position are the development, testing, and documentation of this nascent Bioconductor package. Additionally, substantial opportunity is expected for pursuing independent research projects concerning genome biology and tailored to suit the interests and skills of the successful applicant. The successful candidate will also be involved in the development and teaching of an introductory bioinformatics workshop.

Job Description

40% Conduct primary research to develop statistical code, bioinformatic methods, test cases, and user documentation for an R/Bioconductor software package.

20% Conduct independent primary research on genome biology, functional genomics, and evolutionary genetics.

20% Publish independent primary research results in appropriate journals.

10% Facilitate & support the group’s overall research program through (i) basic training of new students, (ii) supervision of the laboratory personnel, and (iii) maintenance of the laboratory.

10% Assist with developing and teaching an introductory workshop to genomics and bioinformatics for undergraduate students and researchers.

Required Qualifications

  1. Ph.D. in Biology, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Statistics or closely related field.
  2. At least one year of experience with research in genomics and bioinformatics.
  3. Expertise in programming in the R statistical computing language as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Demonstrable independence in ethical conduct of high-quality scientific research.
  5. Evidence of working well within a diverse group, including resolution of major or minor conflicts.
NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an Acting basis not to exceed 6-months.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience developing software packages in R, particularly for Bioconductor.
  2. Strong quantitative/statistical skills, particularly concerning linear modeling.
  3. Demonstrated experience or keen interest in evolutionary genetics as applied to genome biology.
  4. Experience with Illumina-based functional genomic data (e.g. RNA-seq).
  5. Experience with teaching/mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in genomic and bioinformatic methods.
