Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow
The Department of Mathematics has an internationally recognized faculty and a strong graduate program leading to both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. A broad range of programs is possible including algebra, analysis, combinatorics, control theory, dynamical systems, geometry, numerical analysis, probability, statistics, stochastic analysis/control, partial differential equations, set theory, and topology. The department has a long tradition of excellence. The first Ph.D. granted west of the Mississippi was in mathematics at KU in 1895. Since then, the graduate program has been a central part of the department’s research and teaching. Historic Snow Hall, which houses the department, contains state-of-the-art classrooms, lecture spaces, computer labs, and other facilities.

A city of approximately 97,600, Lawrence is located in the rolling hills of eastern Kansas, 35 miles west of the Kansas City metropolitan area and 20 miles east of Topeka, the state capital. Home to Haskell Indian Nations University as well as KU, Lawrence offers the many cultural opportunities of a university town. Lawrence is a wonderful community filled with endless opportunities for historical explorations, beautiful scenery, incredible arts and entertainment venues, and many popular restaurants. Kansas City International airport, The Plaza, and access to world-renowned attractions are less than an hour away.
- Coordinates Math 115 (Calculus I) and teaches a section of Math 115 and a lecture section of Math 125, 126, or 127 (STEM calculus sequence) for the fall and spring semesters. The option for summer session teaching is available but not required.
- Holds regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.
- Adheres to department, College and university policies and procedures.
Professional Performance (15%)
- Works closely with the department’s administration, faculty, and assistant teaching professors to develop and implement changes in the calculus curricula and delivery. Develops educational materials to improve student learning and tools to demonstrate student achievement of learning outcomes in large introductory courses, including online resources and classroom activities.
- Coordinates, with the assistant teaching professors, the calculus courses and services for calculus students. Develops the syllabi, study guides, instructor’s guides, test questions, tests, and the web-based material. Holds regular meetings of 3-hour calculus instructors. Implements the use of technology in the courses. Sets the test dates for the Gateway exam and schedule for the help room.
- Trains, supervises and evaluates graduate teaching assistants assigned to teach calculus courses.
- The Teaching Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to the research mission of the Department of Mathematics, primarily in the area of assessment, curriculum design, and interactive teaching of mathematics, through presentations at professional conferences and publication of works in books, articles, abstracts, or other scholarly works such as the online publication of new active-learning materials in online formats.
- Possible areas of focus for publications and presentations include the scholarship of assessment and curriculum design, the development of new undergraduate laboratories/research opportunities and/or new teaching methods, supervision and evaluation of undergraduate research in the specialist’s area of research expertise, methods to enhance online course resources outside of class time and use of active learning activities to maximize concept mastery during face-to-face class and laboratory/discussion time, development of programs and courses that feature research-based instructional practices (included but not limited to inquiry and discovery based instruction, student-centered instruction, peer-mentoring, and the integration of technology into the classroom).
- Member of the department’s committees on Evaluation of Teaching and GTA Training and Undergraduate Studies-Lower Division.
- Compiles yearly assessment reports on the 3-hour calculus program. Participates in long-term studies of the 3-hour calculus courses.
- Engages in opportunities to enhance knowledge of best practices and to collaborate with similar initiatives in other departments on campus and at other universities.
- Participate in appropriate professional activities.

- Ph.D. in Mathematics or Mathematical Sciences. Include a copy of your transcript, if the degree has been obtained in the past 5 years.
- Record of excellence in teaching college-level mathematics.
