Position Overview

The Kansas African Studies Center is seeking a part-time program and communications assistant for developing outreach activities, managing Center social media accounts and communications, creating promotional materials and providing promotional support for events. The Program and Communications Assistant will also work with Center staff in grant report preparation.

Job Description

Will work closely with the Outreach Coordinator, Office Manager, and Assistant Director to: develop outreach activities both on and off campus, organize and coordinate KASC communications for affiliated KU faculty and students, community members, and alumni; design and produce flyers, press releases, and other promotional material for regular and special events; maintain the Center’s visibility and profile in social media through content creation, curation and management; update and maintain the Center’s website as needed; compose weekly email newsletters and the annual report publication; create, update, and distribute the Center’s calendar of events and activities list; provide support for grant writing; assist with miscellaneous responsibilities in support of KASC activities while working in cooperation with KASC staff team.

Required Qualifications

  1. Graduate student in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0 as evidenced by transcript(s)
  2. Experience with media marketing platforms such as Instagram, Mailchimp, Facebook, Twitter as evidenced by application materials
  3. Experience with Microsoft Word Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook as evidenced by application materials
  4. Strong written skills as evidenced by cover letter and writing sample
  5. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team as evidenced from previous work experience or references
  6. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Academic emphasis on African Studies or the African diaspora
  2. Demonstrated strong oral communication skills and ability to work effectively with the public
  3. Familiarity with KU courses in African Studies and KU’s Africanist faculty
  4. Experience working with KU CMS websites, Wordpress, or other content-management systems as evidenced by application materials
  5. Experience working in an office environment
  6. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud Programs
