Job Description

This is an opportunity to gain valuable field ecology experience working on large scale perennial agriculture experiments in collaboration with The Land Institute. Our main objectives are to understand perennial crop/soil microbial community interactions and how these relate to crop productivity and yield. Primary duties will include plot maintenance, collecting plant and soil samples, processing plant and soil samples, and data entry. A majority of the work will take place at the field station north of Lawrence, but some processing will occur in the lab or in the greenhouse. There will be opportunities for hires to create and complete their own research project relating to plant and soil ecology.

Required Qualifications

**During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Focus and attention to detail
  2. Able to sit, stand or kneel for long periods
  3. Tolerance to summer conditions in the field (insects and heat)
  4. Interest in ecology, agriculture, plants or soils
  5. Reliable transportation is highly desirable
