Position Overview

The Center for Public Partnerships and Research (CPPR) seeks a temporary Assistant Researcher Senior to support expansion of our Data Science infrastructure by transforming data collected through our web based shared measurement application (DAISEY) into data sources that meet specific reporting, business intelligence, and machine learning needs. CPPR specializes in research and evaluation, data science projects, and social innovation work that supports our mission to optimize the well-being of children, youth, and families. CPPR primarily pursues its mission by assisting partners, including state-level and community based organizations, in their work to secure funding, bring key stakeholders to the table, orchestrate large-scale data efforts, and conduct research, cost analysis, and evaluation. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about impacting social change for good. Qualified candidates will have data management experience, an understanding of relational database structures, and basic coding knowledge (ex SQL, PostgreSQL). Transforming existing data sets into data sources will require the candidate to recognize the limitations of a data set, restructure the data, and create joins with other data sets and new variables to meet the needs of the report(s) to be developed using the data set. Familiarity with scripting languages used for data preparation, such as Python or R, is a plus. Candidates with further in-depth knowledge of machine learning with Python are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of Tableau or similar business intelligence tools is preferred. This position will support the Data Science Team under the direction of the Data Science Lead. This position is temporary and projected to last at least through August 31, 2018.

Job Description

70% - Develop, Manage, and Update Data Sources
  • Understand business needs for analysis and report development. Transform existing data sets into data sources by recognizing the limitations of a data set, restructuring the data, and creating joins with other data sets and new variables.
  • Utilize scripting languages such as Python or R for data preparation. Document and track versions.
  • Track and coordinate deliverables, work plan, and timelines to ensure completion and high quality of work.
  • Assist with data science training and support for team members.
  • Maintain and secure data, manage data files, transformations, and preparation
  • Support partner programs in accessing and using their data.
20% - Business Intelligence, Analytics, and Reporting
  • Support initiative and team leads in their efforts to improve social problems using innovative data approaches.
  • Design, create, and maintain interactive business intelligence (BI) reports and analytics solutions including data visualizations and dashboards in Tableau.
  • Assess requirements for BI reports and translate requirements into interactive solutions suitable for different audiences (e.g., community stakeholders, policy makers, scholars).
  • Identify opportunities for machine learning with Python.
  • Implement and deploy developed reports to live application environments.
  • Manage integration of datasets between CPPR analytics tools and BI tools.
  • Identify, develop or support data files, syntax, and analysis plan for evaluation and research projects.
10% - Special projects and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in physics, mathematics, computer science or related field and three years of related experience.
  2. Demonstrated data management and analytics experience using a variety of software packages or tools
  3. Demonstrated experience writing SQL code
  4. Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials and previous work history.
  5. Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently, as demonstrated in application materials and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree or higher in physics, mathematics, computer science or related field
  2. One year of experience working with Git or similar version control tools
  3. One year of experience using business intelligence software, such as Tableau.
  4. One year of experience using Python or related tools
  5. One year of data science experience.
  6. Experience working with data in the social service field
