Position Overview

This position is responsible for designing, coordinating, and conducting training programs based on employee needs for training on organizational services as they come available including, but not limited to, Skype for Business, myCommunity (Office 365/Sharepoint Online), KU’s Content Management System (drupal), and others. This position is a member of the KU IT Technology Instruction & Engagement (TIE) team that reports to the TIE team manager within KU IT Support Services. The position will work closely with the IT Project Management team, organizational service Subject Matter Experts, KU IT Directors, and key IT staff to determine and assure a comprehensive training program meets the ongoing needs of the University community. This position performs interviews and consultations with university management and stakeholders to analyze training needs. The Trainer also assists and is responsible for compiling or creating training manuals, handouts, videos and other online training resources for these or other specific topics.

Job Description

30% - Develops learning objectives, lesson plans, and reference/presentation materials for seminars, workshops, and programs on technology software and services as they come available. Coordinates and instructs attendees as part of programs, workshops, webinars, and/or seminars. Prepare course materials (presentation slides, handouts, manuals, exercises, etc.) and appropriate documentation. Assists in compiling training manuals and online tutorials. Evaluates student achievement and provides/records appropriate records and reports. Periodically evaluates the effectiveness of training programs and learning outcomes. Investigate and determine appropriate training methods from a variety of options including instructor-led (both classroom and remotely), web-based, and pre-recorded training. Produce content appropriate for online delivery of courses, programs, and workshops. May certify professional accreditation.

30% - Works closely with service implementation project team to learn the important details of a new service offering before it is rolled out to campus. Assists in developing communications plans about the new service offering. Helps with project documentation about the service. Researches and demonstrates best practices, helpful tips and hints, and use and develop case examples for the new service. Coordinates with other contacts to obtain needed support services.

20% - Work with KU IT Directors/Managers to:
  • Identify and define department-driven training needs and priorities.
  • Assure that the KU community is appropriately trained in the tools, applications, and services provided by KU IT (especially new tools, applications, and services)
  • Periodically assess the technology service training needs of the KU community and develop materials to meet these needs.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and FAQs in appropriate areas.
  • Develops survey materials that gauge the efficacy of training of technology service offerings.
20% - Provide consultation and technical assistance to students, faculty, and staff in the use of the technology services offered. Respond to requests answering user questions; follow up as necessary. Maintain records of training programs, content, activities, attendance, and evaluations in accordance with procedures; preparing routine reports as needed. Research new technologies to maintain currency in job-related knowledge, products, and applications. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in education, instructional technology, communications, advertising, design, information technology, or a related field.
  2. Three years of instructional or professional experience in technology training.
  3. Experience developing online tutorials.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills as evidenced in application materials and training experience.
  5. Experience developing end-user technical documentation.
  6. Proficient with presentation applications and documentation tools, including: Microsoft PowerPoint, video editing software, and screen capture applications.
  7. Experience learning new technologies and/or skills quickly with both Windows and Mac operating systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Negotiation and consensus-building among diverse groups.
  2. Experience managing small to medium sized projects.
  3. Working knowledge of Blackboard or other online learning management system.
  4. Experience working in a university environment.
  5. Experience coordinating and hosting online webinars to further technology skill development.
  6. Experience using KU’s CMS as a site owner.
  7. Experience as an end-user with any of the following applications: Skype for Business, myCommunity (SharePoint Online and Office 365)
  8. Working knowledge of one or more coding languages (HTML, CSS, JSON, python, etc.)
  9. Industry recognized training certification(s)
  10. Ability to transport 50 lb. laptop cases on occasion.
