Position Overview

The mission of the Center for Educational Opportunity Programs (CEOP) at the University of Kansas is to build a legacy of learners and leaders through a commitment to educational equity. The center houses federal TRIO and GEAR UP grants from the U.S. Department of Education, including the Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program.

The purpose of VUB is to assist veterans in returning to post-secondary educational programs. The Academic Services Coordinator will coordinate the academic services that each VUB participant receives in addition to teaching college preparation and refresher courses for adults who are participating in courses and independent study. VUB provides instruction in math, reading, composition, literature and computer skills. The Academic Services Coordinator provides instruction in one-to-one, small group, and workshop settings. Successful candidate will adhere to the principles of promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in education.

This position is based in Kansas City, KS. Candidates should reside within a reasonable distance to this area. Some travel within the five-county target area is also expected.

Job Description

40% - Present subject matter and facilitate learning in math, reading, composition, literature and computer skills.
  • Provide instruction or tutoring in developmental academic skills, particularly basic math and reading.
  • Complete academic assessments for each participant to determine academic needs.
  • Develop a learning plan for each participant based on academic assessments, prior college work, and the Student Success Plan (SSP).
  • Facilitate independent study (individualized instruction using computer assisted learning and other available resources).
  • Adapt curriculum to individual student and project needs.
  • Develop and maintain an academic support resource library for project participants.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops on educational topics (i.e. study skills, testing, etc.)
  • Be available (on a scheduled basis) to respond to student questions

30% - Maintain accurate records of participant activities and attendance.
  • Develop Student Success Plan for each participant based on needed and requested services.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and confidential client records.
  • Monitor progress of project participants.
  • Assist with maintaining the project's focus on achieving project objectives.
  • Complete documentation using program software to ensure timely and accurate reporting of participant activity.

10% - Coordinate with VUB Advisors, Coordinators, and Director in implementing each participant's Student Success Plan.

10% - Assist with maintaining relationships with community partners and agencies.

5% - Assist the Veterans Upward Bound Director in evaluating program activities

5% - Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

This position serves participants in the Greater Kansas City area. The program office is located in Kansas City, KS, but the required duties may be completed from the office, at community partner locations, or remotely.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree
  2. At least one year of related professional experience working in adult education or with low-income individuals/families, first-generation students or veterans.
  3. Excellent written skills as demonstrated by application materials.
  4. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience in teaching and motivating adult learners.
  2. Veteran status.
  3. Master’s degree.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues and problems experienced by veterans.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with target population, officials in postsecondary institutions, VA medical Centers/VA organizations, community agencies, community organizations, and community centers.
  6. Experience working independently and comply with program guidelines.
