Position Overview

The Institute for Life Span Studies at Parsons, University of Kansas, seeks a full-time (1.0 FTE) Accounting Specialist. This position will work with a program that provides services to individuals with disabilities and their families through collaborative partnerships with a numbers of agencies in a nine-county region of southeast Kansas. The overall program consist of a variety of services including respite care services for families, personal care services to support children and adults in their homes, representative payee services supporting finance management and a crisis intervention program for individuals identified as having intellectual disabilities and mental illness. The person’s primary responsibility includes the management of payroll for 50-70 part-time employees and general duties associated with accounts payable and receivable.

Position Requirement: The successful candidate will be required to be bonded within the first 30 days of employment.

This position is located in Parsons KS.

Job Description

75% - Accounting and Payroll Services:
  • Receive, track, and enter reported work time by employees into the appropriate QuickBooks Program for bi-weekly payment of time worked.
  • Maintain general employment information on employees as required.
  • Prepare and update program reports, enter new families and employees in appropriate data-base.
  • Manage accounts receivable and payables.
  • Submission of tax reports and prepare needed materials for annual audit.
  • Invoice agencies and Authenticare (online system for state reporting) including submission of goal documentation/behavior tracking as required.
10% - Support the representative payee program through the reconciliation of bank accounts (checking & saving) of payees and receive and prepare deposits.

15% - Additional responsibilities will include but not limited to: answering the phone, receiving messages, program clerical support, attending meetings relative to this program and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. High School diploma or GED equivalency and three years of relevant experience or Associate’s degree in Accounting, Business or related field with one year of relevant experience or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business or related field (Degree must be conferred by or within 30 days of the date of appointment or state date).
  2. Minimum of one year experience, QuickBooks and Microsoft Office (word, excel) or similar software programs.
  3. Effective organizational, attention to detail, and written/oral communications skills as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business or related field.
  2. Three or more years with bookkeeping, payroll and/or accounting receivable and payable.
  3. Two years of experience with computers performing, Quicken, QuickBooks, and/or Microsoft Office (word, excel).
  4. Experience working with individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and/or Mental Illness.
