University Academic Support Centers (UASC) is a comprehensive student support program consisting of five unique centers designed to strengthen the academic skills and written communication of students at the University of Kansas. UASC supports the University’s commitment to the academic success and holistic development of students. UASC programs encourage student participation both in and out of the classroom, support academic and personal development, and link students to other campus and community resources for academic and personal support and development. University Academic Support Centers is a department within Academic Success.
Job Description
The Academic Learning Center (ALC) is a unit in the University Academic Support Centers (UASC) that provides programming to all KU students in the form of Supplemental Instruction (SI), Tutoring Services, Academic Consultations, and Academic Success Workshops. The ALC Program Assistant for SI assists the professional staff in the ALC with the coordination of SI including the planning of SI Leader trainings and meetings, creating surveys/evaluations, and compiling of assessment data, and communicating regularly with the SI Leaders.
The main responsibilities of the Program Assistant for SI are:
The Academic Learning Center (ALC) is located on the KU Lawrence Campus in Wescoe Hall, Room 4017.
The Academic Learning Center is open during breaks and the Program Assistant may work based on project/programming needs and the budget. Candidates considered for this position must be available for the full academic year, though remote work and or/absences may be considered for the Summer and academic breaks. Candidates are generally expected to work between 10-20 hours per week.
The candidate hired in this position will attend and participate in regular team meetings.
The main responsibilities of the Program Assistant for SI are:
- Assist in planning the trainings and meetings prior to and throughout the semester
- Schedule and conduct SI Leader observations and follow-up meetings
- Review weekly planning sheets and provide feedback
- Compile attendance from SI Sessions and Office Hours held by SI Leaders
- Communicate with SI Leaders about attendance
- Prepare promotional materials for the SI Program
- Provide feedback to SI Leaders following the review of promotional videos/materials
- Review assessment data and evaluations/reflections and prepare reports
- Compile and propose SI schedules and respond when there is a change in a schedule
- Coverage of the ALC office front desk when needed (answering phone, emails, and providing general customer service)
- Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
- KU undergraduate student enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours and in good academic standing.
- Attention to detail as demonstrated by application materials and work experience.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently while also collaborating with professional staff.
- Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Teams, and Excel.
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as an SI Leader and/or a student participant in the SI Program.
- Demonstrated experience in training and public speaking as evidenced by coursework and/or work experience.
- Excellent verbal communication skills as demonstrated by the interview.
- Prior experience in an office/customer service setting.
- Prior experience using Adobe InDesign and/or Canva.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with KU facilities, services, and processes.
- Ability to interact effectively with student employees, students, staff, faculty, and parents.
