Position Overview
Anschutz Library is at the central hub of undergraduate student activity on the Lawrence campus and it has the largest number of patron visits and in-house use among the KU Libraries.
The print collections in Anschutz Library are concentrated in the sciences, social sciences, and some medical areas. U.S. government documents, the Libraries’ microforms collection, and the Thomas R Smith Map collections are located on the first floor of Anschutz.
The Anschutz Operations Manager position manages circulation services and interlibrary loan operations in Anschutz Library, including direct supervision of Anschutz Access Services staff (Night & Weekend Supervisor, Library Assistant, Maps/GovDocs/Microforms Manager, Makerspace employee) and student employees. This position fosters and maintains quality customer service and reliable staffing and operations in Anschutz Library. The Anschutz Operations Manager coordinates facilities renovation and repair activities, oversees stacks management, public technology implementation and supplies, and provides the day-to-day coordination with Student Services staff who are based in Anschutz, among other operations responsibilities. This dynamic, user-focused position reports to the Director of Public Operations and collaborates with many people and units to support programs and space needs along with staff across the KU Libraries and other University departments.
This position also has oversight for staffing the Spahr Library Service Desk and providing staffed backup support for the Music and Dance Library Operations Manager.

Job Description
50% Anschutz Library Public Services Management and Supervision
- Oversees the process of hiring, training, supervising and scheduling Anschutz Library service desk employees.
- Oversees interlibrary loan operations in Anschutz and coordinates activities with resource sharing staff.
- Maintains high service quality standards and oversees ongoing assessment tasks and initiatives.
- Manages daily operations of the service desk: oversees the opening and closing process, assures appropriate information, services, and referrals are being provided
- Maintains records and prepares statistical reports relating to the responsibilities and operations of the service desk.
- Responds to library user and staff concerns regarding difficult situations, safety issues, and inappropriate behavior.
- Provides student employee staffing of Anschutz, Spahr and Makerspace services within the provided student employee budget.
- Acts as liaison on student personnel issues with the Libraries’ human resources staff.
- Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates the Anschutz Night & Weekend Supervisor, Library Assistant, Maps/GovDocs/Microforms Manager and Makerspace employee.
- Oversees stacks maintenance in coordination with staff and KU Libraries’ Administration.
- Assists Libraries Administration in the monitoring of maintenance, repair and renovation issues in Anschutz Library.
- Meets with Facilities Services staff and needed technicians to help coordinate installations and repairs. Submits and monitors work orders for repairs.
- Liaisons with campus Department of Public Safety, Facilities Services and Security providers in addressing relevant building and overnight security issues.
- Works closely with supervisor and others to maintain Anschutz Library study hall hours as routinely scheduled in fall/spring semesters.
- Implements building and weather emergency responses and keeps Public Safety, library leadership, library preservation, and other library staff advised of situations as they arise.
- Closely coordinates with Libraries’ leadership, librarians and staff in providing services and technology from the Anschutz Library Makerspace.
- Provides ongoing staffing coordination and training in support of regular Makerspace operating hours.
- Collaborates with campus IT to manager public computing and user-centered technology in Anschutz Library public spaces and in the Makerspace.
- Participates in training opportunities for job-specific and developmental purposes. Participates regularly in Operations Manager & Leaders meeting, Circ Forum and other department/division meetings.
Position Requirements
- This position requires working on-site.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree PLUS minimum three (3) years library or related experience.
- Minimum three (3) years of supervisory experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three (3) years of effective customer service experience.
- Experience working with diverse populations.
- Prior work experience requiring attention to detail.
- Experience creating and/or maintaining accurate records.
- Experience coordinating schedules at one or more service points.
- Experience performing basic maintenance on a variety of equipment commonly found in libraries.
- Experience implementing building security, open/close procedures, and emergency procedures.
- Experience working independently in a continuously changing environment.
- Experience working in a deadline driven working environment.
- Familiarity with common classroom technology and hardware/software often utilized in Makerspaces.
