Position Overview

The Office of Admissions reports to the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management which includes the following functional units: Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Office of Graduate Admissions, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Student Information Systems and the Office of the University Registrar.

The Office of Admissions is responsible for domestic undergraduate admissions for both freshman and transfer students. The Office of Admissions coordinates the overall recruitment strategy for KU including high school and community college relations, on and off campus events, prospect and inquiry data management, application processing, transfer credit evaluation and communications.

The Assistant Director position, reporting to the Associate Director for Diversity and Access Initiatives, plays an important role in the execution of events designed to increase college readiness and access. The position will primarily work with external groups to develop on- and off-campus programs designed to facilitate access and attainment of historically underrepresented students (first-generation, low income, students of color, rural and students from under-represented high schools). As the campus visit is the most important conversion and yield strategy, this position ensures the visit experience not only meets, but exceeds expectations for prospective students, guests, community and campus partners. The position will also work closely with the Associate Director for Diversity and Access Initiatives on creating a comprehensive recruitment event strategy to recruit a more diverse student class.

The Assistant Director is part of the Diversity and Access Initiative strategic planning team and the Campus Visit team in the Office of Admissions. In addition, the position supports the overall university recruitment efforts by providing recruitment support through participation in campus visit programming, conducting large and small group presentations, and meeting with prospective students and guests. This position requires travel by automobile or plane to any city or region/event where events coordinated take place. Some evening and weekend work required.

This position will also supervise one graduate assistant and work with the Multicultural Recruitment Team, a group of Student Ambassadors with a focus on multicultural recruitment and outreach.

Job Description

70% Diversity and Access Initiative Recruitment and Event Coordination
  1. Coordinates and presents to targeted middle school, high school and community college on-campus group visits such as AVID, Gear Up, TRiO, etc.
  2. Coordinates on and off-campus event such as the Leadership Symposium series, Destination KU, Super Saturday, Rock Chalk KC!, Hispanic Development Fund Visit Day and others as needed.
  3. Orchestrates event logistics, correspondence, and staffing in collaboration with key university stakeholders.
  4. Work with Communications team to ensures pre- and post-event communications are set up for on- and off-campus events and group visits.
  5. Conducts program evaluation and incorporates feedback and results to enhance future programming efforts.
  6. Collaborates with Associate Director of Admissions for Diversity and Access Initiatives and Admission Representatives on targeted events strategy.
  7. Works with key campus partners and community stakeholders such as Black Alumni Network, KU academic professional schools, and the Collaborative.
  8. Works in collaboration with the daily visit and admissions team for space and staffing needs.
15% Presentations & Student Recruitment
  1. Provides presentations in a central public speaking role to small and large groups of prospective students, families and community stakeholders; communicates KU’s competitive advantage at on- and off- campus events.
  2. Is an active member of the admissions on-call team; in this role they will support the daily campus visit program by meeting one-on-one with prospective students and their families, along with friends of the university. Additionally, they will meet with walk-in office visitors and respond to telephone and email inquiries.
  3. Staffs targeted recruitment events that occur on-campus (Junior Days, Senior Days, Scholar Days, Rock Chalk Days, Destination KU, Leadership Symposiums, etc.) and off-campus (both in Kansas and out-of-state) as necessary.
10% Supervision
  1. Supervises one Graduate Assistant.
  2. Assists with the coordination of the Multicultural Recruitment Team.
5% Other Responsibilities
  1. Serves as a member of a variety of strategy teams and consults/offers input on topics including, but not limited to programing, DAI recruitment strategies, publications, and presentations.
  2. Other Responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Director of Admissions for Diversity and Access.

Position Requirements

  • This position requires working on-site, in-person.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
  • The ability to travel by automobile or plane.

Required Qualifications

  1. Master's Degree or Bachelor's degree with three years of related experience.
  2. At least 3 months experience with public speaking as evidenced by coursework, volunteer activities, or job experience.
  3. At least one year event coordination experience as evidenced by application materials.
  4. Strong written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  5. Experience with common computer applications such as Microsoft Office.
  6. Valid Driver's License or ability to obtain one at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master's degree, or bachelor's degree plus three years of related experience.
  2. A graduate of the University of Kansas.
  3. Knowledge of the academic programs and support services at the University of Kansas.
  4. Ability to effectively communicate in a wide range of professional settings.
  5. Ability to be a self-starter and show initiative.
  6. Fluent in Spanish.
  7. Ability to work with diverse student populations, including transfer, high-ability, low-income, first generation, geographic regions, ethnic groups, middle school, high school, and non-traditional students.
  8. Experience in public relations, marketing, advertising or university admissions.
  9. Experience in effective supervision of undergraduate student staff.
  10. Ability to effectively organize time and tasks.
  11. Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
