Position Overview

The Assistant General Counsel position (GENERALIST) is a full-time, unclassified professional staff appointment. Incumbent will report to the General Counsel and Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs for the University of Kansas. The Assistant General Counsel position is integrated into the University of Kansas and will provide legal services to clients across the Lawrence and Medical Center campuses.

Job Description

60% General Legal Advisement

  • Directs client engagement, comprehensive legal services and advising on a wide variety of legal issues serving all departments and units of the University, in coordination with other attorneys in the Office of the General Counsel.
  • Engages in matters of employment and faculty rights, tenure, Title IX, student conduct matters, residency appeals, construction, real estate, finance, business transactions, intellectual property and university compliance with applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Advises leadership, faculty and staff on a wide variety of matters arising from the operations of the University of Kansas and its controlled affiliates.


20% Policy Review & Interpretation

  • Reviews and interprets policies relating to University operations, faculty and staff:
    • Sponsored research and related funding and compliance requirements; ownership and enforcement of copyrights, trademarks and patents; legal issues relating to the arts, online education, internet and social media, and library operations.


20% Other duties as assigned

  • Works with internal and outside counsel.
  • Serves on committees as needed.
  • Attends conference as needed.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities.

Position Requirements

  1. This position is hybrid. Incumbent works on-site and remote based on a set schedule.
  2. Occasional travel to other campus locations.

Required Qualifications

  1. J.D. from an accredited American law school and membership in the Kansas bar or temporary Kansas license and Kansas bar admission within one year.
  2. Minimum of three (3) years active practice experience after bar admission.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials and interview process.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience managing multiple, complex, time-sensitive assignments simultaneously with a high degree of organization and effectiveness.
  2. Experience working with diverse populations.
  3. Experience solving complex problems.
  4. Experience working in a higher education setting.
  5. Experience with two or more areas of legal practice relevant to higher education, public service or corporate business.

Advertised Salary Range

$100,000 - $130,000, final determination commensurate with experience
