Position Overview

The Protein Structure and X-ray Crystallography Laboratory (PSXL) is a core laboratory that focuses on the 3-dimensional structure determination of proteins, using X-ray crystallography, for collaborators and manages the structural biology tasks for grant projects. As such, the PSL performs all tasks in the structure determination process including initial construct design, assistance with protein purification, crystallization, X-ray diffraction data collection, structure solution/refinement and structure analysis. The PSL Assistant Researcher Senior will be responsible for assisting with sample purification, setup and monitoring of all crystallization experiments, refinement of crystallization conditions, sample preparation for X-ray diffraction tests, documentation of experimental tasks and preparation of project reports. Job Description

85% - Conduct research
The PSL Assistant Researcher Senior will carry out and manage crystallization experiments and assist with sample preparation and analysis using X-ray diffraction methods for investigator’s research projects. This includes the monitoring and tracking of all crystallization screening experiments and devising experimental plans for crystal optimization. Additional responsibilities include assisting with protein purification, preparation of protein samples for crystallization experiments and analysis of protein sample quality.

10% - Laboratory supervising
Oversee the daily operations of the PSL crystallization laboratory. This includes maintaining the inventory of consumable supplies, preparing stock solutions for crystallization, general laboratory cleanliness, introducing users to the laboratory guidelines and providing training to users in the area of protein crystallization.

5% - Documentation/Analysis
Responsibilities include: 1) Preparation and analysis of scientific research materials for experiments performed in the PSL, 2) Devising research methods and plans for carrying out purification and crystallization experiments, 3) Maintaining detailed notes and records pertaining to all research work, 4) Writing detailed final reports for investigator’s projects and 5) In some cases co-author publications of research results.

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor's degree in a related field and 3 years of related experience OR a Master's degree in the area of relevant field/area of research.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience in any or all of the following: protein crystallization, protein expression/purification methods, X-ray diffraction methods for single crystals and computational crystallography.
