Position Overview

The Department of Molecular Biosciences, University of Kansas, seeks an assistant researcher with interests and experience in molecular biology and Drosophila husbandry. The successful candidate will work with on genomic, genetic and evolutionary aspects of selfish genetic elements using Drosophila. Projects include, but are not limited to CRISPR genome editing, fluorescence microscopy and Drosophila mating experiments. This position consists of an initial 1-yr appointment beginning in May 2018. The applicant should be extremely organized, work well with others, have a willingness to learn, and be able to participate at many levels in the laboratory.

Job Description

  • 40% Molecular biology such as cloning, PCR, nucleic acid extraction, cell culture, next generation sequencing library preparation, etc.
  • 40% Drosophila husbandry including making media, maintaining stocks, crosses, etc.
  • 20% Work on an independent research project (if interested) to be agreed upon with the PI.

Required Qualifications

  1. B.S. in Biology or closely related field
  2. Experience with molecular biological techniques as evidenced by application materials

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with Drosophila husbandry
  2. Computational skills (R, perl, etc.)
  3. Experience with CRISPR/Cas9 genome modification OR
  4. Experience with fluorescence microscopy
