Position Overview

The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas is searching for a full-time, tenure-track/tenured professor at the rank of Assistant of Associate Professor of strategic communications. Appointment at a particular level will be based on an applicant’s research/creative portfolio and teaching record. The position is expected to begin August 18, 2022.

The School carries an atmosphere of collegiality that is supportive of an environment which is interdisciplinary, collaborative and diverse. Applicants that demonstrate teaching, research or creativity expertise in one or more of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: media planning and buying, advertising, public relations, data analytics, big data, network analysis, content creation, diversity in Ad/PR, strategic campaign management, digital marketing, and/or new and emerging media and communication practices, or related areas.

Successful applicants will have a Ph.D. in strategic communication, advertising, public relations, journalism, mass communication, marketing, psychology, business, or a related field. Applicants are encouraged to outline areas of interests in their application materials.

The successful candidate will be able to engage with students in our newly remodeled building, where we’ve focused design and technology around the student experience and future media. Opportunities are available to teach at graduate level (master and doctoral), and to engage and mentor graduate students. You will also be surrounded by colleagues who share your excitement about working with students, discovering and testing media developments for the future, serving communities, and are eager to create new ways to understand and engage audiences.

The School has a state of the art experimental research laboratory which includes physiology data collection, eye tracking and facial emotion recognition. The School is also home to the Center for Digital Inclusion, as well as the Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Populations.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by the time of appointment.

Job Description

40% Teaching:
Teach and develop courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs (in-person and online), based upon needs of the School.

40% Research:
Demonstrate sustained productivity through peer-reviewed publications, sponsored projects/grants, papers and presentations for national and international academic and professional audiences, or other forms of research, whether creative- or community-based projects recognized at the national or international level.

20% Service:
Service responsibilities include involvement in the regular academic activities of the School, including committee assignments and major School functions, serving on and chairing graduate committees, as well as participation in professional service in academic, professional and/or media organizations.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of research/creative work and teaching in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity included in CV and (3) information provided from three professional references.

For appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (Tenure-track):
  • A Ph.D. in strategic communication, advertising, public relations, journalism, mass communication, marketing, data analysis, or a related field. If ABD, the Ph.D. must be achieved within six months of employment start date.
  • Demonstrated (or high potential for) teaching excellence in a university setting including the ability to develop and teach in-person and online courses.
  • Demonstrated (or high potential for) research and/or creative success as shown through publications, portfolio, awards, research grants, or working papers.
  • At least two years of full-time professional experience in marketing and/or strategic communication, or in a related field.
For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor (tenured):
  • A Ph.D. in strategic communication, advertising, public relations, journalism, mass communication, marketing, data analysis, fine arts or a related field.
  • Proven record of teaching excellence in a university setting including the ability to develop and teach in-person and online courses.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research and/or sustained creative works as shown through publications, portfolio, awards, research grants, or working papers that have either enabled the candidate to be successfully promoted to Associate Professor at a research-oriented university of a similar or higher research profile as the University of Kansas, or meet the expectations in professional experience for qualifications.
  • Professional experience, research/teaching partnerships or documented industry engagement in strategic communication or other relevant field to the position.
