Position Overview

Marketing and communications are vital to the ongoing success of the KU Edwards Campus (KUEC) and School of Professional Studies (SPS). They connect the opportunities afforded by KUEC and SPS to the people who can benefit from them, whether those are potential students, current staff and faculty, or others. KUEC is located in Overland Park, Kansas and is home to SPS. These two units of the University of Kansas (KU) share common leadership, missions and goals. The associate director for marketing & communications supports these units achieving their strategic and operational goals by sharing information with, and at times persuading, various audiences. This role is within the KU Marketing unit, the university’s central marketing team. This role will embed with KUEC and SPS to simultaneously act as KU Marketing’s representative to KUEC and SPS and as KUEC and SPS’s representative to KU Marketing. The associate director will work closely with the dean of KUEC and SPS and on that position’s objectives.

This role is an individual contributor expected to produce some communications. In particular, this role will use the benefits of its immersion in KUEC and SPS to write different types of communications for different audiences. By attending meetings, working on projects and other interactions with KUEC and SPS leaders and team members, the person in this role will develop and leverage a deep knowledge of KUEC and SPS to create strategies, manage recurring work and personally produce communications. As such, the person in the role must be a strong writer. Personal work products will include external mass emails, internal mass emails, blog posts, news releases, social media posts, executive talking points, event invitations, web page content, reports, and more. The associate director will create and distribute some mass emails (such as newsletters) through a marketing automation system and using templates, and the person will publish web content through a content management system. Audiences to which this position will communicate (primarily through written communications) include prospective students, current students, prospective employees, current staff and faculty, public officials, industry representatives, higher education leaders within and beyond KU, donors, the general public and others.

The associate director of marketing & communications for KUEC & SPS will have operational budget management responsibility. The person must ensure funds are being invested as intended and within the established constraints. The person must also manage the labor budget (measured in hours) as they access KU Marketing human resources for project work. The associate director of marketing & communications for KUEC and SPS will be supported by one or more people who assist with budget management.

With the assistance of analysts and other team members, the associate director of marketing & communications for KUEC and SPS will report the results of the marketing and communications work performed. That will include tactical measures (e.g., reach, opens, clicks, shares, media pick-ups, etc.) and strategic measures (e.g., new leads, lead sources, lead conversion rate, ROI, A/B test results, etc.). The associate director of marketing & communications may also be involved in market research, such as new program exploration and competitive analyses, leveraging KU Marketing tools and personnel as needed.

At the University of Kansas, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are an important part of our culture and university strategic plan. Applications from members of underrepresented groups are encouraged, noting the value that differences bring to our organization, students, staff, faculty, and community.
