Position Overview

The University of Kansas, Department of History, seeks an associate, full, or distinguished professor of the history of slavery in the British Atlantic World. We define the British Atlantic World broadly as an area that spans the British Isles, the Americas, and Africa. We define the history of slavery expansively, including but not limited to ideologies, economies, institutions, lived experience, race, identity, and gender. The successful applicant will complement and enhance departmental strength in Early American, colonial Latin American, African, and early modern European history. This position is a full-time, academic year (9-month) appointment.

For appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, the following information will apply: (1) Will maintain an active research agenda in the history of slavery in the British Atlantic World leading to publication in appropriate venues. (2) Will participate in the teaching mission of the History Department, including teaching courses at all levels and provide evidence of outstanding teaching abilities as well as advise graduate and undergraduate students. (3) Must have demonstrated experience in constructing or contributing to a diverse and inclusive learning environment. (4) Should be engaged in other professional activities and will contribute service to the department, College, University, and nation.

For appointment at the rank of Distinguished Professor, the following information will apply: (1) Should have a prominent national and international reputation for research and publication. (2) Will maintain an active research agenda in the history of slavery in the British Atlantic World leading to publication in appropriate venues. (3) Will participate in the teaching mission of the History Department, including teaching courses at all levels and provide evidence of outstanding teaching abilities as well as advise graduate and undergraduate students. (4) Must have demonstrated experience in constructing or contributing to a diverse and inclusive learning environment. (5) Should be significantly engaged in other professional activities and will contribute service to the department, College, University and nation.

It is expected that the distinguished or full professor will hold an earned Ph.D. and be a tenured professor (or have equivalent credentials). It is expected that the associate professor will hold an earned Ph.D., and either be a tenured professor or be prepared to be considered for tenure immediately (or have equivalent credentials).

Job Description

40% Research for Associate & Full Professor
(50% Research for Distinguished Professor)
  • Conduct research in area of expertise.
  • Develop and maintain an active research program, which expands the frontiers of knowledge and culture.
  • Publish and disseminate research through scholarly, peer reviewed publications as well as other venues that reflect scholarly effort and achievement.
  • Act as a positive example of responsible scholarship for students and developing scholars.
  • Attend and present findings at professional conferences.
40% Teaching/Advising for Associate & Full Professor
(30% Teaching/Advising for Distinguished Professor)
  • Associate & Full Professor will teach four courses/academic year in the History Department; courses may be cross-listed or cross-referenced with other departments.
  • Distinguished Professor will teach three courses/academic year in the History Department; courses may be cross-listed or cross-referenced with other departments.)
  • Develop curricular programs in British Atlantic World history, the history of slavery, and other aspects of historical study.
  • Prepare for class meetings and apply continual effort to be engaged with the historical discipline and convey its value to the students.
  • Responsible for making suitable alternative arrangements for class, in case of absence.
  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Hold regular office hours or be available for consultation by students.
  • Advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Adhere to department, College, and University policies, in regard to instructional duties.
20% Service for all levels.
  • Participate in appropriate professional service activities at the regional, national and international levels.
  • Serve the Department, College and University on committees and projects.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through: (a) descriptions of research agenda and teaching philosophy in letter of application, (b) record of accomplishments and productivity included in curriculum vitae, and (c) information provided from three professional references.
  • Ph.D. in history or related field of study
  • For distinguished professor, currently a tenured professor (or have equivalent rank), and eligible to be hired at the rank of distinguished professor.
  • For full professor, currently a tenured professor (or have equivalent rank)
  • For associate professor, currently a tenured professor or be prepared to be considered for tenure immediately (or have equivalent rank)
  • Demonstrated ability to teach beginning and advanced courses in specialty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, advising and contributing to a diverse and inclusive learning environment, as evidenced by teaching philosophy statement and/or reference letters.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in research as evidenced by publications, externally funded research grants and/or awards, and an active research agenda.
