Position Overview

The School of Business at the University of Kansas is searching for a Professor in Business Analytics for the 2020-2021 academic year. The search is open at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level. Appointment at a particular level will be based on an applicant’s scholarly and teaching record. This is a full-time, tenure-track position beginning August 18, 2020.

Candidates that demonstrate research and teaching expertise in the application of data analytics or information management to contemporary business problems are encouraged to apply. Experience in collecting, organizing, managing and extracting useful decision-making information from massive complex databases is also highly desirable. This position will interact with students, faculty, industry partners, and the broader business community through research focusing on business analytics and information systems.

Candidate interests in the areas of business intelligence, decision support systems, cloud computing, data visualization/graphics, data mining, information systems, machine learning, multivariate and/or Bayesian statistics, computer simulation and modeling, Big Data analytics, scripting languages or programming frameworks (e.g. R, SAS, SQL, Python, Hadoop, Java, MatLab), data management platforms (SAP, Oracle, etc.) and/or analytics tools (Spotfire, Tableau, Oracle Data Visualization, Pentaho, etc.) should be outlined in the research statement required as part of the application package. Additional relevant interests such as engagement with the business community on digital innovation, data analysis, and providing insights and solutions in the application fields of health care, energy, fraud detection, finance, retailing, and/or insurance should also be outlined in application materials.

Job Description

40% Teach a combination of required and elective courses in business analytics at the undergraduate, MBA and doctoral levels.

40% Conduct and publish research on business analytics topics in leading academic journals.

20% Engage in school, university, and professional service activities as needed.

Required Qualifications

  1. A PhD or D.B.A in discipline directly related to business analytics (e.g., data science, data management/modeling, predictive analytics, information science, information systems, applied statistics). Must complete, or have reasonable expectation of completing the degree by August 18, 2020.
  2. Evidence of potential for engaging in high quality research and teaching business analytics courses.
  3. A clear ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate, masters, or Ph.D. levels in the areas of business analytics.
Evaluation of these requirements will be made through application materials. Appointment at a particular level will be based on an applicant’s scholarly and teaching record.

For appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor:
  1. A Ph.D. or D.B.A. in a discipline directly related to business analytics (e.g., data science, data management/modeling, predictive analytics, information science, information systems, applied statistics). Degree must be earned by August 18, 2020.
  2. Demonstrated (or high potential for) teaching excellence in business analytics.
  3. Demonstrated (or high potential for) excellent scholarship as shown through publications and working papers.
For appointment at the rank of Associate Professor:
  1. A Ph.D. in a discipline directly related to business analytics (e.g., data science, data management/modeling, predictive analytics, information science, information systems, applied statistics).
  2. Record of productive teaching excellence in business analytics or information systems.
  3. Demonstrated excellent scholarship as shown through publications that have enabled the candidate to be successfully promoted to Associate Professor at research-oriented university of a similar or higher research profile as the University of Kansas.
For appointment at the rank of Full Professor:
  1. A Ph.D. in a discipline directly related to business analytics (e.g., data science, data management/modeling, predictive analytics, information science, information systems, applied statistics).
  2. Established record of teaching excellence in business analytics/information systems and experience directing doctoral students.
  3. Sustained record of excellent scholarship as shown through publications that have enabled the candidate to be successfully promoted to Full Professor at research-oriented university of a similar or higher research profile as the University of Kansas.
