Position Overview

The Department of Chemistry is looking for an exceptional individual to help develop, enhance, and implement a variety of communication initiatives including maintaining the department’s social media and website, assisting chemistry staff and faculty with design-related, social media requests, lead photographer and photo editor, posting and running the departmental digital signage, and promoting departmental seminars. You will oversee the design and layout of our annual chemistry newsletter and other communication related initiatives in both print and digital forms. There is also the potential for you to lead new communications initiatives, such as video series, social media features, etc.. As a communications assistant, you will receive hands-on experience in website development, photo editing, publications, and social media creation.

Job Description

Social Media content assistant and publisher (50%): Develop faculty media posts, student and alumni highlights, communications around events and resources for students, and other strategic writing as needed. Research and interview contacts for articles.
  • Curate, design and schedule posts for our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts
  • Take photos and edit photos for social media needs
  • Schedule posts and essentially be the voice of our social media
    • Monitor social media traffic to measure popularity

Website content management (25%)
Website maintenance duties will be assigned as needed for chem.ku.edu. This will include, but not limited to:
  • Add current news and events to website
  • Ensure content is up-to-date
  • Edit pages as requested by staff and faculty
  • Monitor website’s traffic to measure popularity
  • Offer and implement suggestions to better suit website users’ needs

Write and brainstorm social media content (10%): Assist in community management and social media strategy. Take initiative to start social media campaigns, like creating a video series, person highlights, etc.

Other communication duties (15%): Perform other communication tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. Must be at least sophomore status as stated in application materials.
  2. Majoring in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, chemistry, graphic design, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related field as indicated in application materials.
  3. GPA above 3.0 as stated in application materials.
  4. Hands on experience with publishing tools (like InDesign and Photoshop, Canva, etc.), website editing/design, photo editing and experience with social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn).
  5. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Past volunteer, internship, or employment experience where communications skills were used.
  2. Proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop.
  3. Experience with Drupal 8 or similar CMS.
  4. Strong understanding of, and affinity for, social media and social networking with the ability to efficiently research trends and best practices.
  5. Previous website content management experience as expressed in application materials.
  6. Demonstrated knowledge of Associated Press style through application materials and writing samples.
  7. Ability to work during breaks. Work can be completed remotely, so it’s not necessary to be in Lawrence during breaks.
  8. Highly organized, detailed and an excellent communicator.
  9. Self-starter and proficient in time management.
  10. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  11. Positive attitude and a history of strong work ethic.
  12. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

Advertised Salary Range

$15 per hour

Work Schedule

10-15 hours on weekdays, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. in office and work remotely outside of business hours
