Position Overview

Consultant Development Group Facilitators are current undergraduate or graduate writing consultants who serve as peer leaders and educators. In addition to consulting hours, they meet biweekly with small groups of writing consultants and lead discussions on Writing Center theory and practice as well as issues and ideas group members encounter in the course of their work. On alternative weeks, CDG Facilitators hold office hours to prepare for meetings, answer questions from group members, and hold make-up meetings. In addition, CDG Facilitators assist with consultant observations, check-ins, and other training and administrative tasks as needed.

CDG Facilitators will typically hold this position for a full academic year (August-May). Applications will be reviewed on a yearly basis.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Consult with students one-on-one in person and online to discuss writing projects in a variety of disciplines and genres
  • Contribute to the planning of CDG themes and readings at the start of each semester
  • Lead at least 6 biweekly meetings with peer groups a semester
  • Share your knowledge and experiences, contributing to a diverse, collaborative, and safe learning environment
  • Complete all readings and prepare discussion questions and activities for each meeting
  • Hold at least 6 biweekly office hours to assist members of the group
  • Liaise between the KUWC professional staff and consultants to share updates and complete reports
  • Conduct consultant observations and complete observation reports
  • Assist with mid-semester check-in meetings
  • Participate in facilitator meetings
  • Assist with additional training and administrative tasks as needed
  • Complete all responsibilities of the undergraduate or graduate writing consulting position, such as consulting, training, and workshops, in addition to the role as a CDG Facilitator

Required Qualifications

  • Currently employed as an undergraduate or graduate writing consultant with the KU Writing Center
  • Worked in the KUWC for at least 2 semesters
  • Demonstrated effective consultation practices through observations and client surveys
  • Strong communication skills through speaking, writing, and listening

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in leadership roles
  • A Federal Work-Study (FWS) award for the academic year.
