Position Overview

The University of Kansas seeks a Director to lead the Data Analytics (DA) unit. Reporting to the Chief Data Officer within the Analytics, Institutional Research, and Effectiveness (AIRE) office, this position will be required to perform functions related to the collection, interpretation and use of institutional data to support planning, assessment, decision-making, and reporting.

The leader of this unit will manage a dynamic team of analytical staff with campus-wide responsibility supporting the data visualization needs of the institution. This includes but is not limited to gathering business requirements, supporting campus constituents at all levels with data informed decision making, and developing visual dashboards to aid senior leaders with decision support.

The successful incumbent will have strong communication and collaboration skills to work with subject matter experts across campus-wide administrative systems (i.e., PeopleSoft Campus Solutions, Oracle Cloud ERP, PeopleSoft Human Capital Management, etc.) and related leadership staff to ensure data accuracy and contextual understanding for individual and cross-campus projects. The ability to grasp very complex technical business requirements, yet produce meaningful and clear analyses is imperative.

Incumbent will work remote and on campus based on a set departmental schedule.

Job Description

Leadership (60%)
  • Provide strategic direction, leadership, and management of the DA staff.
  • Oversees the development of policies and processes for collecting, linking and analyzing data from a variety of sources by working with internal system subject matter experts, state and federal agencies, institutions of higher education and other organizations as appropriate.
  • Develops processes to monitor the overall integrity of data, ensuring decision-makers have access to accurate data for high impact decisions.
  • Supervises the DA team. Ensures hiring, evaluation, and mentoring activities are completed according to University procedures and deadlines.
  • Assure unit effectiveness and accountability through a service experience council.
  • Manage the DA budget and resources.
  • Create an organizational culture within the DA unit that enables the team to support the university’s strategic goals.
  • Lead the university strategy for conceptualizing, developing, and deploying dashboards needed by senior leadership of the university and various office constituencies.
Campus Engagement & Outreach (35%)
  • Direct outreach efforts to campus data consumers and analysts, serving as an authority on the availability of university data.
  • Develop and deliver programs to promote data literacy on campus.
  • Prioritize subject areas for modeling in the warehouse based on feedback from executive leadership, coordinating with the Data Architect for developer resource availability.
  • Develop and disseminate a roadmap that keeps the campus apprised of planned data projects and associated impact.
  • Attends executive level team meetings to provide information or to design new analyses.
Other (5%)
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Keeps apprised of national, state, and educational trends/issues, communicating changes to senior leadership and taking action as appropriate.
  • Represent KU at conferences or professional organizations.

Position Requirements

  1. This position is hybrid. Incumbent will work remote and on campus based on a set departmental schedule.

Required Qualifications

  1. Master’s degree in a related field plus five (5) years of relevant experience OR Bachelor’s plus seven (7) years of relevant experience.
  2. Five (5) years of progressive leadership experience.
  3. Seven (7) years of supervisory experience.
  4. Three (3) years of experience using data visualization or business intelligence software (e.g. Tableau, OBIEE, Power BI, etc.).
  5. Strong written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience in an institutional research or business intelligence setting at a university, including familiarity with the academic enterprise and knowledge of key issues and concepts in higher education.
  2. Experience using statistical analysis software such as SAS, SPSS, or STATA. High-level of proficiency with SAS highly preferred.
  3. Master’s Degree in Statistics, Business, Mathematics, Data Science, Social Sciences, or closely related field.
  4. Excellent interpersonal skills, as demonstrated by application materials, interview and professional references.
