Distinguished Professor, Hall Chair in American History

- Conduct research in area of expertise.
- Develop and maintain an active research program, which earns national and international recognition and expands the frontiers of knowledge and culture.
- Publish and disseminate research through scholarly, peer-reviewed publications as well as other venues that reflect scholarly effort and achievement.
- Act as a positive example of responsible scholarship for students and developing scholars.
- Teach three courses/academic year in the History Department; courses may be cross-listed or cross-referenced with other departments.
- Develop curricular programs in American history and other aspects of historical study.
- Prepare for class meetings and apply continual effort to be engaged with the historical discipline and convey its value to the students.
- Responsible for making suitable alternative arrangements for class, in case of absence.
- Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
- Hold regular office hours or be available for consultation by students.
- Advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
- Adhere to department, College, and University policies, in regard to instructional duties.
- Participate in appropriate professional service activities at the regional, national and international levels.
- Serve the Department, College and University on committees and projects.
The distinguished professor is expected to treat students, colleagues and staff with professional courtesy and to respect their rights. The distinguished professor is expected to meet satisfactory standards of performance in all three areas of responsibility and to carry out those responsibilities in accordance with the Faculty Code of Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct
- Ph.D. in history or related field of study.
- Current tenured professor status or equivalent credentials.
- Demonstrated ability to teach beginning and advanced courses in specialty.
- A record of excellence in teaching, advising and contributing to a diverse and inclusive learning environment, as evidenced by teaching philosophy statement and/or reference letters.
- A significant record of research and commitment to excellence in research as evidenced by publications, externally funded research grants and/or awards, and an active research agenda.
- Eligibility for appointment with tenure at the distinguished professor level, specifically: a distinguished international reputation for research and publication in pre-20th century American history; significant engagement in other professional activities; and evidence of outstanding teaching abilities.
