Position Overview

The KU Writing Center, a unit of Undergraduate Studies, provides over 7,000 face-to-face and online consultations annually to writers from KU Lawrence, KU Edwards, and other educational institutions. KUWC also offers a Writing Fellows program at the graduate and undergraduate levels; class visits and in-class workshops, graduate writing groups, and multiple writing events during the Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions. As part of the global community, the KU Writing Center fosters diversity in all of its dimensions and supports writers in reaching their personal and professional goals. All writers, with their unique life experiences, worldviews, languages and voices, are respected and welcomed. We provide an environment that is conducive to diverse learning styles and forms of expression, and we respect writers' use of their home languages and world Englishes.

Job Description

As an office assistant, you will work together with writing consultants and administrators as a team to foster a community of writing and to provide service to KU's diverse global community when the Writing Center is open. In recognition of the growing diversity of the KU community, we would like to expand our staff to reflect and project a vision of inclusivity and sensitivity as defined by the Writing Center and the broader university. You will have the distinct opportunity to meet and collaborate with thousands of individual students with a variety of identities, life experiences, worldviews, languages and voices, offering you limitless chances to develop socially, academically and professionally.

As the face of the Writing Center, you will provide expert, friendly customer service, while being punctual and reliable. In addition, you will be expected to communicate efficiently and work effectively with a diverse staff and clientele. You must be able to multitask during peak service times.

Job duties include:
  • Manage daily consulting operations in Anschutz and Watson Libraries
  • Manage key components of an online appointment system
  • Understand and promote KUWC services as posted on the Center’s website
  • Communicate effectively with staff, consultants, and other office assistants to ensure seamless customer service
  • Support staff by answering the phone and taking messages, answering emails, creating and editing documents, transcribing audio files, and delivering mail
  • Present informational class visits and staff information tables to increase student awareness of Writing Center services
  • Assist in organizing and staffing events such as Graduate Research/Write-Ins and Late Night at the Roost.
  • Communicate with clients from all backgrounds in a respectful manner
  • Perform other duties as requested

After one semester of service:
  • Additional development is available to continuing office assistants, such as the Lead Office Assistant position.
  • Opportunities for special projects or assignments with coordinators and/or administrators.

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate student at KU (enrolled in at least six hours)
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher, and Acrobat.
  • Excellent written communication skills as evidenced in application materials

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multicultural and/or multilingual experience
  • Excellent oral communication skills as evidenced in screening interview
  • Previous customer service experience
  • Working knowledge or ability to quickly adapt to technology like Drupal, Skype for Business/Lync, and myCommunity (Sharepoint)

Advertised Salary Range

$8.25/hour. Continuing employees are eligible for a $0.25/hour pay raise each semester of employment.
