First-Year Course Coach & Instructor
The First-Year Course Coach & Instructor is a vital part of the APEL team, helping to support KU students’ success through the UNIV first-year curriculum. The first-year curriculum is designed to assist students with navigating the university, connecting with peers, staff, and faculty, exploring experiential learning and co-curricular activities, and establishing healthy financial and wellness habits. This position will serve as the instructor for UNIV 101 and other first-year courses that enroll students who need additional assistance developing academic, study, and time management skills. Additionally, this position will serve as a case manager who works with students enrolled in their courses to ensure they are accessing and utilizing the appropriate services and resources to make them successful at KU. This position will work very closely with academic advisors, financial aid counselors, career coaches, and other student and academic support personnel.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to ensure students are growing and persisting; empower and support students to develop and accomplish their personal, academic, and career goals.
- Manage a caseload of students by being accessible and willing to assist with the informational needs of students and help them connect with campus resources.
- Develop a rapport and a safe relationship with students.
- Work with students to develop individualized goals and a plan for success.
- Keep in close communication with students’ support teams.
- Collaborate with other key offices/departments on campus to ensure student awareness & participation in support programs.
- Research best practices related to first-year students, college student transitions, experiential learning, first-generation students and BIPOC students.
- Assist the APEL in programming student support workshops.
- Prepare and teach multiple sections of KU orientation, first-year, and experiential learning courses in the fall and spring semester.
- Meet regularly with peer coaches to coordinate and plan course components.
- Establish consistent grading criteria and communicate/distribute grades in a timely manner.
- Plan out-of-class activities based on the needs and interests of your students.
- Prepare and conduct well-organized presentations, class discussions, and activities on various topics.
- Communicate accurate and timely information to students about academic and student resources.
- Abide by all curriculum guidelines such as learning outcomes, assessment, out of classroom activities, etc.
- Develop programming that aligns with Career & Experiential Learning and APEL goals and the needs of the students.
- Collaborate with APEL Curriculum Manager to analyze assessment data, conduct instructor. evaluations, and support projects related to UNIV curriculum and first-year students.
- Research best practices related to the first-year students, college student transitions, and specific populations of students (e.g. first-gen, Pell eligible, BIPOC students).
- Provide feedback to improve course quality or student experience.
- Participate in Academic Success meetings related to first-year programming as needed.
- This position requires working on-site.
- Master’s degree in Education, Social Work, or related field.
- Two years teaching, counseling, or advising experience.
- Strong written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
- Previous experience working with students, staff, faculty and administrators at an educational institution.
- Experience assisting or supporting underserved populations.
- College teaching experience.
- Experience teaching UNIV 101 or similar orientation seminar.
- Documented participation in experiential learning, such as undergraduate research, service learning, and/or study abroad.
- Experience with Lawrence campus and related resources.
