Position Overview

This is the First- and Second-year English (FSE) Administrative Intern position for the Department of English.

Job Description

This person will serve as a member of the First- and Second-year English Committee, taking minutes at meetings, providing background information on previously discussed issues, and researching materials needed by the committee in its decision-making. The intern will also do the following: Assist in the construction and implementation of surveys. Serve as chair of the First- and Second-year English textbook-selection sub-committee and meet with publishers’ representatives. Assist in the planning and execution of professional-development workshops. Cooperate in grant-writing for funds for teacher development and improvement. Keep current on new publications and recommend items to be added to the First- and Second-year English resource library and check-out books. Help to develop English 101, 102, and 200-level resource materials for FSE Blackboard site. Keep office hours to answer routine questions from staff and students. Assist with preparing for and implementing the orientation for new graduate teaching assistants in August. Assist in implementing assessment and other projects designed to improve the program. Work on other tasks as requested by the Director and Associate Director

Required Qualifications

  1. Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department of English at the University of Kansas
  2. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Interest in Writing Program Administration.
  2. Experience with committee work or other administrative duties.
  3. Completed course work for the PhD in English.
