Position Overview

KU Transportation Services is looking to fill a General Maintenance Repair Technician. This position is responsible for working on a team to perform a wide variety of maintenance and repair tasks to Parking facilities (physical structure, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems). This position requires the operation of work issued vehicles.

KU Transportation Services is responsible for parking permit sales, parking lot enforcement, parking for special events, and Information Booths that ensure pedestrian safety along Jayhawk Boulevard and oversee the KU on Wheels bus system, JayLift, and SafeRide services. KU Transportation Services is a division of KU Operations.

Job Description

40% - Parking Facility Maintenance Repair and Signage: Inspect pay on foot machine for damage and test for malfunctions. Repair malfunctions as necessary. If vendor service is required on the pay-on-foot device, call the vendor or contact supervisor for assistance. Assist with the coordination of service. As needed, periodic assistance with maintenance and/or repair of revenue equipment. As needed, pull all fare boxes from the garages. Work closely with community and campus members to explain how pay machines work, how to obtain a receipt, etc. Provide input and feedback for potential mechanical upgrades to garages. This employee is the primary person in charge of all signage on campus and would be responsible for installation, general upkeep, and at times procurement of all signage and related accessories (signs, poles, fasteners, tools, and equipment)

35% - Facilities Clean Up: Daily vacuum carpets, dust mop, and wet mop tile floors. Clean up spills as needed. Empty trash in offices and other Parking & Transit facilities. Dust furniture as needed. Renew and buff tile floors in main corridors weekly and individual offices as needed or requested. Properly wax and maintain tile floors. Spot clean carpets daily as needed. Steam clean carpets at least once a year. Clean restroom sinks, mirrors, toilets, urinals, and floors daily. Replace paper towels and toilet tissue as needed. Clean all Parking and Transit facilities' windows and glass doors inside and outside. Properly dispose of trash. Replace burnt-out light bulbs. Keep custodian closet clean and properly store and clean all mops, buckets, etc. Keep a list of supplies that are needed. Put away and rotate supplies when reordering. Keep all doorways and adjacent sidewalks clear of snow and ice as needed. Other duties deemed necessary.

15% - Garages and Parking Lots: Assist with cleaning of parking garages and stairwells, which includes sweeping, dusting ledges, washing windows, pulling trash, power washing, and keeping walks and doorways free of ice and snow. Employee attaches snow blades to maintenance vehicles and Parking Department trucks and pushes snow. Picks up debris in garage entrance and exit lanes, as well as the parking area of both garages. Keeps lawns surrounding garages free from debris. Uses a paint roller on an extension rod to paint the parking lot and garage parking stall lines. Keeps handrails and drain covers painted. Replaces light bulbs in booths and elevators.

5% - Athletics and Special Events: Employee works athletic and other special events outside regularly scheduled hours. This requires placing event signs at restricted parking lots 48 hours before the event. Selling parking spaces, setting up barricades, directing traffic in lots, and restricting traffic flow. This employee would serve as a lead worker of an area during events (Sports and otherwise) during event operations. This employee could also be asked to help with enforcement, including writing citations (with LPR vehicles or handhelds), facilitating vehicle towing, and immobilizing vehicles via tire boots or Barnacle equipment.

5% - Other Duties: This employee would also help in gaps in needs for the department. They could help with enforcement (game operations or general day-to-day enforcement if necessary). This employee would be called on cover booth breaks or cover booths for a typical daily process. This employee could be called on for any other duties deemed necessary.

Required Qualifications

  1. One year of experience in a building or facility service trade (ex., HVAC, plumbing, electrical, grounds, relocation, etc.). An Associate degree or vocational school certification may be substituted for required experience.
  2. High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  3. Must have a valid driver's license by the time of hire and maintain that license throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Professional HVAC experience in commercial or residential buildings.
  2. Professional plumbing or electrical experience.
  3. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of skilled crafts and building trades.
  4. Experience working in a multi-building environment.
