Position Overview

Based at KU’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREES), the Graduate Assistant (GA) will contribute to CREES’ digital humanities projects. The GA’s primary focus will be working on “Collapse and Rebirth: A Living Archive on the Collapse of the Soviet Union and Beyond,” a joint project with Michigan State University to assemble and maintain a digital archive of first-hand accounts of the fall of the Soviet Union (http://olcottm.msu.domains/s/livingarchive/page/welcome). The GA will assemble, annotate, and process archival materials, contribute “stories” that interpret and link archival entries, translate materials from Russian and/or other regional languages, scan and upload new materials to the archive, and identify potential new resources for inclusion on the site.

The GA will also contribute to additional CREES digital humanities projects on an ongoing basis, including projects related to cybersecurity, disinformation, and cultural and regional ethnic and religious diversity. These projects will be hosted on the CREES website.

GA receives in-state tuition rates and sponsorship of 3 hours of tuition each fall and Spring. GA also qualifies for a 75% subsidy towards the optional graduate student group health insurance plan.

Job Description

  • Assist with a range of CREES digital humanities projects
  • Working with the project directors, assemble, annotate, and process archival materials for “Collapse and Rebirth”
  • Contribute interpretive content to analyze and connect archival entries
  • Translate materials from Russian and/or other regional languages
  • Scan, upload, and identify new materials for “Collapse and Rebirth” and CREES websites
  • Help maintain web resources and respond to public inquiries
  • Provide regular updates to project directors and CREES staff

Required Qualifications

  1. Graduate student in good academic standing in an MA or PhD program in the humanities or social sciences at KU
  2. Enrollment in at least 6 hours each semester or appropriate dissertation enrollment for post-comp doctoral students
  3. Interest and commitment to Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REES)
  4. Proficiency in Russian or another REES-relevant language
  5. Strong communication and organizational skills
  6. Interest in learning the Omeka S web publishing platform
  7. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Graduate student in good standing in one of the following departments: Anthropology; Geography; Global and International Studies; History; Political Science; Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies; Slavic, German, and Eurasian Studies; Sociology
  2. Demonstrated experience in web design and publishing
