Position Overview

Based at KU’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, The Russian Review ranks among the oldest and most widely-read journals of Russian and Eurasian studies. Each issue features engaging articles and book reviews on culture, history, literature, media, politics, and society. The journal’s scope encompasses the diverse peoples of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia, in the region and across the globe. The GA plays a key role as the journal’s editorial assistant, handling virtually all aspects of the journal’s book review operation and helping connect the journal connect with new audiences through digital outreach and engagement. The journal publishes approximately 150 book reviews each year and maintains an active digital presence through its website, online publications, and social media accounts.

Job Description

  • Researches new publications; receives, logs, and organizes review copies in multiple languages by specialization and content
  • Reads books and summarizes their content for Editorial Collegium members; identities potential scholars to review received books
  • Instructs publishers, book authors, book reviewers concerning the content of reviews, and responds to inquiries regarding reviews and review policies
  • Approves book reviews for publication; edits book reviews for content and style; translates texts to be published from Russian to English; provides backup editing and proofreading for the Managing Editor
  • Works with Managing Editor to maintain and update ScholarOne and other electronic databases
  • Works with the Editor and CREES staff to maintain the journal’s website and develop new digital content for the website and the journal’s Wiley Online Library site
  • Contributes posts to the journal’s social media accounts
  • Files, copies, sorts mail, and responds to other inquiries as needed

Required Qualifications

  1. Graduate student enrolled in an MA or PhD program in the humanities or social sciences at KU
  2. Interest and commitment to Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies
  3. Strong communication and organizational skills
  4. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Graduate student in good standing in one of the following departments: Anthropology; Geography; Global and International Studies; History; Political Science; Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies; Slavic, German, and Eurasian Studies; Sociology
  2. Reading knowledge of Russian
