Position Overview

The Madison and Lila Self Graduate Programs provides financial support and professional development opportunities for promising graduate student leaders at The University of Kansas with the Madison and Lila Self Graduate Fellowship and the Madison and Lila Self Memorial Scholarship.

Madison and Lila Self were deeply motivated by the idea that developing and investing in young leaders was vital for a successful future. In 1989, the Self’s launched and permanently endowed their flagship program, the Self Graduate Fellowship. With the addition of a scholarship in 2019, the Self Graduate Programs department administers two distinct programs: the Self Graduate Fellowship and the Self Memorial Scholarship. Both of these funding programs support graduate students at KU and align with the Self's mission to “identify, recruit, and provide development opportunities for exceptional students who demonstrate the promise to make significant contributions to their fields of study and society as a whole.”

Job Description

The Graduate Assistant provides support in administration of the Self Graduate Fellowship and the Self Memorial Scholarship for the Madison and Lila Self Graduate Programs department and staff. Specifically, the Graduate Assistant supports the Fellow Development Program for the Self Graduate Fellowship (SGF), the Scholar Development Program for the Self Memorial Scholarship (SMS), alumni relations and programming for the department, and contributes to recruitment strategies of prospective students for both programs. Overall, the Graduate Assistant will be afforded the opportunity to learn about and participate in the administration of these donor-driven and Endowed graduate programs as specified by gift letters and guidelines.

Self Graduate Programs has four full time staff members. The Graduate Assistant reports to the Assistant Director of Self Graduate Programs. All work within Self Graduate Programs is accomplished in collaboration with the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Graduate Studies (the Managing Trustee),the SGF Board of Trustees, and the SMS Advisory Board.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the development and execution of the four-year SGF Fellow Development Program, the distinctive feature of the SGF, to meet the goals established in the donor guidelines – including Fall Skill Session, Spring Skill Session, Holiday Luncheon and Poster Session, Policy Luncheons, Communication Coaching Series, and SGF Symposium. Conduct research about topics, content, speakers, facilitators, resource materials, and readings. Provide on-site program support and coverage as needed.
  • Assist in the development and execution of SMS Scholar Development Program; conducting research about topics, content, speakers, facilitators, resource materials, and readings. Provide on-site program support and coverage as needed.
  • Manage program documentation. Evaluate programs and assess effectiveness in meeting program goals. Create a longitudinal database of programs.
  • Support the Society of Self Fellows (SSF), the alumni network of the Self Graduate Fellowship; alumni mentor program, electronic newsletter and analyzing alumni data regarding career placement, career achievement, and national location.
  • Support Recruitment Coordinator by contributing to recruitment strategies and research of prospective students for both programs. Provide local support at recruitment fairs as needed.
  • Assist with general department duties.

Required Qualifications

  • KU graduate student in good academic standing enrolled for the 2022-2023 academic year.
  • Enrollment in at least 6 hours during the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters, or appropriate dissertation enrollment for doctoral candidates.
  • Demonstrated strong written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and effective in presenting information to individuals and groups as demonstrated by application materials.
  • Experience and knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to organize information, schedule activities, and work independently.
  • Demonstrated strong written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to relate to a diverse group of students, staff, and faculty.

Additional Candidate Instructions

GA receives in-state tuition rates and sponsorship of 3 hours of tuition each fall and Spring. GA also qualifies for a 75% subsidy towards the optional graduate student group health insurance plan.

Work Schedule

August 2022 through May 2023. Summer semester employment may be negotiated.

This is an academic year appointment (nine to ten month appointment) with possible opportunities for summer semester employment.
