Position Overview
THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS TENURED FACULTY ONLY.
The University of Kansas seeks a Director for its Center for Global and International Studies (CGIS) with a demonstrated ability to provide innovative programming. The Director provides leadership and oversight for all Center activities, as well as fulfilling teaching, research, and service responsibilities in their home department as a tenured faculty member at the University of Kansas.
Building upon the exceptional international and global resources available at KU, the Center for Global and International Studies (CGIS) develops cross-regional, interdisciplinary academic, research, and outreach programs with local, regional, and national impact. CGIS offers international expertise, education, and global perspectives on the world through undergraduate and graduate degree programs in International and Global Studies. These degree programs include nationally recognized specialized tracks in Latin American and East Asian Studies as well as minors that focus on Europe, the Middle East, and Global and International themes. A streamlined Master's degree in Interagency Studies is available primarily for military officers at the Command and General Staff College. In addition, the Center organizes a career series for students with international interests and sponsors community and campus activities covering topics of transnational scope.
Applicants should provide evidence of strong administrative, grant-writing, and fundraising skills. The Director is expected to perform duties throughout the calendar year. Appointments are generally based on an academic year (9-month), with an administrative supplement and summer salary commitment. The remaining 0.5 FTE of the position serves as a tenured faculty member within their assigned unit. The initial appointment for the Director is of a five-year period, which may be renewed based upon mutual agreement, performance, and the satisfactory conclusion of a comprehensive review conducted in the final year of the five-year cycle. The Director serves at the pleasure of the Vice Provost over the Institute for International & Global Engagement (IIGE).

Job Description
CGIS DIrector Duties (0.5 FTE)
20% Teaching/Advising
- Provides oversight and leadership for all unit activities.
- Provides oversight and leadership within the unit for diversity, equity, inclusion initiatives and activities.
- Administers and promotes the undergraduate and graduate academic programs of the unit, including the newly included area studies tracks.
- Reviews and modifies, in consultation with unit faculty and IIGE leadership, the long-range planning for the unit.
- Oversees all internal budgetary, administrative, and personnel matters.
- Supervises and reviews the unit's faculty and professional, academic, and University support staff, and supports faculty and staff development.
- Seeks enhancement of all unit resources by actively seeking external funding. Priority will be given to competitive grant funding from Federal sources.
- Develops and enhances research and educational relationships between the unit and other units across the University, both public and private.
- Develops long-term planning for future leadership by cultivating/mentoring faculty members from across the University.
- Executives College and University policy in the unit effectively.
- Represents the Center to other University units and reports to IIGE.
20% Teaching/Advising
- Teaches courses in his/her field of specialty.
- Advises students, including student mentoring and providing directed readings.
- Supervises graduate teaching assistants, as assigned.
- Serves on committees that supervise and evaluate student progress.
- Engages in scholarly research, including publishing appropriate peer-reviewed books and articles, and presenting papers at professional conferences on a regular basis.
- Provides general service to one's home unit, the University, the state and the profession.
Required Qualifications
- Tenured appointment with the rank of Full Professor or Associate Professor at the University of Kansas.
- Prior Experience as an academic leader, including developing and enhancing research and educational relationships among faculty and between the unit and other related units on campus.
- Undergraduate and graduate level teaching experience.
- Strong record of scholarly achievement, as evidenced by an established program of research with the promise of continued productivity.
- Strong communication skills, as evidenced by application materials, interview process and prior work experience.
- Experience working with diverse populations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior administrative/management experience with evidence of success.
- Interdisciplinary and international experience in teaching, research and/or service.
- Experience with KU and KUCR administrative procedures.
- Experience seeking outside funding.
- Experience managing multiple projects.
