Position Overview

The Intramural Sports Officials is responsible for providing an atmosphere of fun in a competitive, yet safe, environment. Officials must be able to implement Intramural Sports policies and sport specific rules in order to maintain an appropriate level of control, fairness, and safety. Officials should maintain a positive attitude on-site and should always be striving to improve their umpiring and officiating skills.

This is a seasonal position with the opportunity to officiate additional sports such as basketball, soccer, and flag football in the spring 2022 semester.

Job Description

Recreation Services and the Intramural Sports program are seeking students to join our team as Intramural Sports Basketball Official and the fall 2021 Pre-Holiday Basketball Tournament. The official is responsible for effectively officiating the sport of basketball and the general safety of the participants.

No prior officiating experience is needed. All training will be provided by student Supervisors prior to beginning work.

Participation in Intramural Sports by officials is encouraged!

The duties of an Intramural Sports Officials include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Accurate documentation of hours worked
  • Minor pre-game court set up
  • Pre-game captain's meeting administration
  • Unbiased administration of rules decisions based on training for that particular sport
  • Verification of final score of all games worked with a signature on each completed score sheet
  • Assigning an appropriate Sportsmanship Rating to each team following each contest
  • Assisting other officials and/or supervisors in any matters concerning Intramural Sports

Required Qualifications

An applicant for the position of an Intramural Basketball Official must have:
  • Status as an enrolled student with at least 6 hours at The University of Kansas
  • Work history that required being moderately physically active for hours at a time (maximum of four hours at a time)
  • A baseline knowledge of the sport of basketball
  • Current NFHS Concussion In Sports Certification or willingness to obtain within the first month of employment

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred applicant for the position of an Intramural Basketball Officials will have:
  • Previous officiating or sports participation experience

  • A professional and cooperative demeanor

  • Availability to be present and engaged at the Intramural Basketball Officials Training on:
    • Thursday, November 4 from 5:00p – 8:00p; Basketball in room 202/203
    • Wednesday, November 10 from 5:30p – 7:30p; Basketball on court 1941
    • Thursday, November 11 from 5:30p – TBD; Pre-Holiday Basketball Scrimmages

Work Schedule

An Intramural Basketball Official will have the following work hours:

Sundays through Thursdays: Early evening to late evening
