General Maintenance Worker - Inspector


Position Overview

Facilities Services supports KU's mission of learning, scholarship, and creative endeavor by operating and maintaining the University's physical plant and grounds. Job duties for this position include inspecting campus interior and exterior locations for quality assurance, safety and compliance. Duties may also include limited assistance to maintenance trade workers. This position requires the operation of work issued vehicles.

Work Schedule – 7:30am-4pm, Monday through Friday.

Job Description

90% - Inspects vacant dorm rooms, common areas, offices, classrooms, mechanical rooms, restrooms etc. for quality assurance, safety and compliance. Checks for issues like; leaky faucets, malfunctioning toilets, drawers, cabinets, doors. Checks HVAC system for proper function. Checks walls, ceilings, flooring for issues. May use standard tools like outlet receptacle tester, screwdriver, etc. Performs checks, takes pictures and reports issues digitally so tradespeople can follow up and make repairs. Inspects outdoor areas for similar quality assurance and compliance.


5% - Skilled Trades Assistance: May assist skilled tradespeople with minor repairs as needed.

5% - Perform other related work as assigned. May assist staff with emergencies including winter weather cleanup efforts.

Position Requirements

  1. Operate vehicles in transporting self and materials to inspection sites.
  2. Perform work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold) inside and outdoors.
  3. Work overtime and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  4. Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather. Must digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications as required.

Required Qualifications

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  2. Must have a valid driver’s license by time of hire and maintain the license throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience in any or all of the following trades: HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Paint, Carpentry, and Masonry.
  2. Experience working in a university, college or other multi-building campus environment.
  3. Experience with inspecting locations and/or site inspection software.
