Postdoctoral Researcher


Position Overview

The Erber lab in Medicinal Chemistry, School of Pharmacy at The University of Kansas is currently seeking a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher interested in developing tools to study DNA-protein interactions and to apply said tools to investigate the roles played by DNA-protein interactions in human physiology and pathophysiology. The successful candidate will participate in the research projects currently underway in the Erber lab including, but not limited to, the roles of DNA-protein interactions in cancer biology, diabetes, and neurodegeneration disease. We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual with in-depth knowledge and extensive skills in chemical biology and analytical chemistry.

Job Description

  • Responsible for performance of laboratory research to develop tools to study the roles played by DNA-protein interactions in human physiology and pathophysiology.
  • Establish and maintain laboratory experiments using analytical chemistry and chemical biology skills. Specific duties may involve (1) cell culture, (2) bioconjugation chemistry, (3) development and validation of HPLC assays, and (4) mass spectrometry-based quantitation of DNA adducts and carcinogen metabolites in human samples.

  • Maintain certain laboratory equipment and record keeping. Train other lab personnel on the proper use and care of specialized equipment, provide general assistance to other lab personnel. Oversee daily operations of research setting.

  • Literature searches and analysis of published data. Generation and review of experimental documentation including report generation, daily recording of experimental procedures and results generated by the individual in laboratory notebooks, as well as editing and preparation of manuscripts and grant applications.

  • Assure compliance with safety programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. PhD in the areas of Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or closely related field.
  2. Experience with high performance liquid chromatography, cell culture, biopolymer synthesis and assay development as demonstrated by a minimum of two publications.
  3. Excellent written communications skills as demonstrated in CV and publications.

NOTE: To be appointed at the Postdoctoral Researcher title, it is necessary to have the PhD in hand. Appointments made without a diploma or certified transcript indicating an earned doctorate are conditional hires and are appointed on an acting basis not to exceed six months. Upon verification of degree the appointment will be extended to its full duration.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Expertise in a stable isotope dilution quantitation by mass spectrometry, nanospray ionization, nano HPLC.
  2. General laboratory and management organizational skills.
  3. Experience working independently as well as with a diverse group of people.
  4. Ability to multitask as demonstrated by application materials and interview.
  5. Evidence of willingness to learn new techniques.
  6. Experience with manuscript preparation and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
