Transition Programs Coordinator


Position Overview

The Center for Orientation and Transition Programs (OTP) coordinates Orientation, Hawk Week, and other first-year transition programs designed to help students discover, engage and belong at the University of Kansas. The Transition Programs Coordinator is responsible for coordinating our signature welcome program, Hawk Week, and other programs for undergraduate students designed to enhance their experience and increase their academic success. This position is the primary contact for and coordinator of all transition programs and supports the many initiatives and programs of OTP, including Orientation. The Transition Programs Coordinator must have strong communication skills, demonstrated ability to work in a detailed manner with strong attention to accuracy, and a desire to build and maintain robust campus partner and stakeholder relationships.

The Center for Orientation and Transition Programs is housed within the Centers for Orientation and Academic Advising Programs, a division within Academic Success. This position reports to one of the Assistant Directors of the Center for Orientation and Transition Programs.

Job Description

40% Welcome Programming
  • Coordinate and serve as the primary contact for all welcome programs for the Center for Orientation and Transition Programs. These include Hawk Week, Winter Welcome and other programs geared toward first year student success and transition.
  • Alongside OTP leadership, the Transition Programs Coordinator will plan, implement, and assess our welcome programs.
30% Transitions Programming
  • Work with OTP Assistant Directors to identify gaps in the student transition experience and plan and implement programs designed for these gaps, including Rest, Relax, Recharge, I am KU, Your First Year, and other efforts following the first weeks of the semester.
  • Work closely with OTP staff and campus partners to identify other areas where student programming support would be beneficial.
20% Orientation Support
  • Provide programmatic support for Orientation.
  • May participate in the selection and training of Orientation Assistants, may help to provide campus-wide training sessions for campus partners related to OTP events and programs, and may participate in outreach activities for the Center for Orientation and Transition Programs, including prospective student recruitment events, the orientation opportunities fair and related programs, and other programs hosted within the division of Academic Success.
10% Other Duties as Assigned

Position Requirements

  1. This position requires working on-site.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s Degree PLUS one (1) year of related professional experience OR Associate's Degree PLUS three (3) years' of related professional experience OR High School Diploma PLUS five (5) years' related professional experience.
  2. Experience working with diverse student populations.
  3. One (1) year of experience with student programming and/or event planning.
  4. Strong written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
  5. Prior work experience requiring strong attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Two (2) years’ experience working with diverse student populations in a university setting.
  2. Experience with Canvas, the myKU portal, Rock Chalk Central or CORQ, and Enroll and Pay.
  3. Experience with student programming or event planning in a virtual setting
  4. Experience working with staff and faculty at KU.
