Upward Bound Instructor


Position Overview

The University of Kansas Upward Bound programs are federally funded TRIO programs that works with first-generation and low-income college-bound students (rising 9th – rising 12th graders) in Shawnee, Douglas, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties with the goal of increasing the rate at which students complete high school and graduate from college.

The Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute is an intensive six-week academic program that gives participants a chance to experience college life while preparing for their upcoming school year. Students share a room in a university residence hall with other participants and interact with instructors and residence hall advisors through taking five academic classes, have support finishing homework with the help of tutors.


The Upward Bound Program Non-Bridge Summer Institute instructor will develop and implement content-area curriculum and serve as a role model for high school students who are participating in the Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute. Classes will be held Monday -Thursday, June 12 –July 7, 2023. Orientation for instructors is tentatively scheduled for May 25, 2023.

The pay rate is $20-$25 per hours depending on qualifications. These positions are on-going temporary summer appointments.

Primary Objective: Prepare students in subject areas they may expect to encounter during the upcoming academic year with a focus on learning study skills that will help students succeed in high school and college.

Secondary Objective: Motivate students toward college and assist in building their self-esteem and sense of achievement.

Job Description

50% - Instruction
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the project's overall goals and assist with a challenging program of study that will promote success and generate confidence within each student
  • Develop and implement content-area curriculum/lesson plans Monday-Thursday
  • Identify any providing resources (e.g., reading material, instructional aides, etc.) needed to implement curriculum
  • Assess students' cognitive needs and develop a curriculum to address those needs
  • Provide opportunities for hands on classroom activities

35% - Administration
  • Complete all administrative tasks fully and punctually. Tasks include but are not limited to completing weekly student progress and instruction reports, daily attendance, and final grade reports for each student.
  • Always maintain sensitive student information
  • Read and respond to all communication, stay up to date on change in schedules
  • Must attend training prior to program and weekly staff meetings as required
  • Be flexible and willing to do other duties as assigned

10% - Policy Enforcement
  • Model and enforce all university and program policies
  • Respond promptly to student issues, conflicts, mediation needs, and crisis situations
  • Document all policy violations consistently
  • Report any inappropriate student behavior and/or violations to policies to appropriate staff

5% - Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

Position is located on-site on the Lawrence, KS campus.

Required Qualifications

  1. High School Diploma/GED equivalent and 60+ undergraduate hours at the end of 2023 spring semester.
  2. Available to teach June 12-July 7, Monday-Thursday.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree
  2. Graduate credit
  3. Experience with culturally diverse students
  4. Subject area teaching expertise and experience
  5. Experience with Federal TRIO Programs
  6. Candidate must have strong commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in education.
