Graduate Student Hourly


Position Overview

The Kansas African Studies Center (KASC) seeks a qualified graduate student to fill the position of Program Evaluation Assistant (PEA). The successful applicant will play an integral role in collecting, analyzing, and reporting on data relevant to KASC activities. These relevant activities include enrollment and student performance in African language and other African Studies courses, user engagement with the KASC website and social media accounts, survey responses and chat comments from outreach events and virtual programming, and placement of KASC graduates.

Job Description

The Evaluation Assistant will work closely with center staff collecting, analyzing, and reporting on data relevant to KASC activities. These relevant activities include enrollment and student performance in African languages and other African Studies courses, user engagement with the KASC website and social media accounts, survey responses and chat comments from outreach events and virtual programming, and placement of KASC graduates.

Required Qualifications

  1. Graduate student in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0 as evidenced by transcript(s)
  2. Skill in website management and social media communication as evidenced by application materials
  3. Experience in database management, and demonstrate skill in qualitative and quantitative analysis
  4. Strong written skills, as evidenced by cover letter and writing sample
  5. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  6. During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: 1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or 2) be pre-enrolled in upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or 3) be enrolled in summer session or 4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments)

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Academic emphasis on African Studies (or other Area, Global, or International Studies) or experience living and working in African settings.
  2. Familiarity with an African Language other than English, as evidenced by application materials
  3. Demonstrated strong oral communication skills and ability to work effectively with the public
  4. Familiarity with KU courses in African Studies and KU’s Africanist faculty
  5. Experience working with KU CMS websites, Wordpress, or other content-management systems as evidenced by application materials
  6. Experience working in an office environment
  7. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud Programs
