Position Overview

The Language Training Center, a grant-funded program in the Ermal Garinger Academic Resource Center at the University of Kansas is seeking part-time lecturers to provide elementary level foreign language instruction to a military audience. Qualified applicants will have a Master’s degree in the target language or a closely related field, advanced proficiency in the target languages, and prior experience teaching at the post-secondary level. The successful candidate must have appropriate authorization to work in the U.S. before employment begins. Any employment with the University of Kansas is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check.

Job Description

75% Teaching Duties
  1. Prepare course materials, exams, and lesson plans in consultation with the language directors and the Project Pedagogy Specialist.
  2. Provide 3 hours of on-site instruction per week at the elementary level in the target language.
  3. Provide 1 hour of online instruction per week via teaching videos and/or online exercises.
  4. Assign final grades.
25% Administrative Duties
  1. Maintain open and timely communication with students outside of class hours via email or other media such as Skype.
  2. Attend periodic meetings with teaching and administrative staff, including training prior to the beginning of the semester.
  3. Adhere to departmental, college, and university policies.

Required Qualifications

Evaluation of the following requirements will be made through (1) descriptions of work experience and educational experiences in letter of application, (2) record of accomplishments and productivity addressed in C.V., and (3) information provided from professional references.
  1. Master's degree in the target language or a closely related field such as area studies or linguistics. Native speakers of these languages with a Master's degree in other fields are welcome to apply.
  2. Advanced proficiency in the target language as evidenced by successful completion of at least 18 credit hours of graduate-level language classes, by formal certification (minimum of ACTFL Advanced High, CEFR B2, or ILR 2+/2+), or by faculty evaluation.
  3. Advanced proficiency in English as evidenced by application materials.
  4. At least one year of post-secondary teaching experience in the target language.
  5. Ability to travel to Fort Leavenworth twice per week as required for course meeting times.
  6. Ability to pass KU’s standard background check as well as the background check conducted by Ft. Leavenworth personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. PhD in the target language or in a closely related field.
